When The Old Fool Remembers

The old fool folds a bony talon
jealously around the timeless and universal
when the old fool remembers their value
though the blood of the age surges in the old fool's body
and the scars of the old fool's particular history
are painfully ever present.
This, for better or worse, is what I do.
I do remember splinters, blisters and nettle stings
but I'm no Seamus Heaney.
I can't bring bac...

Dinner Tonight

The American appears to cough
While mouthing an obvious lie

Relying on a charm
He’s stolen from another guy

Laying out a vision
Suspiciously familiar

As the other actors at the table
Poke at a cold dinner

While the Canadian seems to choke
On her hemp salad

The Chinese envoy excuses himself
To send another message

The American proposes a toast
To friendship and progress

Shadows on a broken vessel

Photo by Dmitry Ermakov on Unsplash

Fresh water suits my watery nature.
I squint at the ripples of redemption,
Watch the ducks glide beside me

Keeping me on the straight and narrow.

The call of strangers splatters across
The sky and I choke on what I know ,
And cannot even whisper out, or sigh.

Mountains and sky reflected in water.

The ordinary has become extraordinary

On Love

Love isn't as romantic as they paint it to be.

It was not a magical premonition knowing who I'd marry someday.

It was getting to know you and deciding that on my own terms.

It was not blazing fire and passion.

It was a gentle touch,

An easy way of  coming into my life.

Like sunshine in the morning,

slowly illuminating everything on its path.

Love

Empty Mirror.

Is sobriety killing my creativity?
Or is it better off this way?
It's hard to find some comfort in this
When all I know is pain

I couldn't go on much longer
With the way I was feeling inside
But who am I now that I'm sober?
Loss of identity will reside

Let me feel the lines of your hands
From your finger tips on down
I don't know how to fix me
But your skin is safe and sound

My a...

Illuminated

From the center of our solar system
The sun casts light out to every corner of the universe.

We celebrate the light,

In our calendars and almanacs
  as eclipses, equinoxes, and solstices
In our paintings and literature
  as epiphanies.

To the sun credit is commonly given
for all life on earth,

Personal Struggle

There's a simple logic to seeing the worst  in others

It's like a happy-proof vest for a sad  person undercover

The bad we see in others is a reflection of how we feel

And that explains a lot of things a great deal

The same way a thief hates to be stolen from  and a liar hates to be deceived

Is the same way some persons fail  to see in others the good they can't see in themselves

Happy Heaven Club

Up in heaven there is a club.

Full of people that I love.

I have named it “Happy” because you’ll see,

Everyone is as jolly as can be.

There are no illnesses or unhappy thoughts,

No broken bones or negative reports.

Just laughter and merriment all around,

If only we could see this from the ground.

I’d like to visit and see my friends,

Go to the place where sadness ends.

Going forward is futile

To follow that path

And after all the meaningless debates on generalship

I find it far more noble

So I will dance a little jig

straight

to your resting place.

Confident

You won't outflank me this time.

Felt like all I did was betray
Myself and my own destiny,
I'd lay it where They told me.
Then one day I guess I had some sort of grand epiphany
The bricks laid down so gently when I focused on me
And a path began to form,
