Running Out of Cotton Wool

Running Out of Cotton Wool

You know I grew up on a farm

Could always have drowned in the lake

Died from the fall of a big tree

Or simply from treading on snake

And then there's the horse-drinking trough

Was always near top (pretty full)

Could easily have fallen from a galloping horse

Or gored by our favourite pet bull

So by today's standards

I'm pretty lucky to be alive

But...

I fear we may soon face a shortage

Of top-grown Australian cotton wool

To wrap up our dear precious children

But also our adventurous ones as well

Of course there is only one problem

Will they discover a world beyond screens?

Which appear to have become widely approved by

So-called protective parents it seems

In medicine it's a well-known habit
To find a germ and eagerly nab it
To inject it to get a protective reaction
From the body's defence force faction.
So - in life in general we should act
And understand that it's also a fact
The young need injections of risk and dangers
So when they're older they're not strangers.
Well-meaning adults can play the fool
By cossetting kids in cotton-wool !
