TWO PRESIDENTS

Getting away from poetry per se for a moment, here are some fascinating reminders of the links between

the murders of Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy as we approach the 56th anniversary of the latter's death.

Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846;  Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Lincoln was elected president in 1860; Kennedy was elected president in 1960.

Both wives lost children while in the White House.

Both presidents were murdered on a Friday;  both were shot in the head.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy; Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.

Both men were killed by men from the South; both were succeeded by southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson who succeeded Lincoln was born in 1808; Lyndon Johnson was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839; Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939.

Both men were known by their three names; both names comprised of 15 letters.

Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theatre; Kennedy was shot in a Ford Lincoln car.

Lincoln was shot in a theatre and his killer hid in a warehouse.

Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his killer hid in a theatre.

Both assassins were killed before they could come to trial.

A week before he was shot, Lincoln visited Monroe, Maryland.

A week before he was shot, Kennedy was with Marilyn Monroe.

(Spooky - or what?!)

It seems unlikely that history records anything remotely similar
anywhere to this extraordinary set of coincidences. For once, the
word "uncanny" seems inadequate.
