Looking Back

Raised on a farm

always working

always poor

but always wanting

better things

always wishing for escape

from the drudgery

the sameness

yet when they finally got away

and saw what life was like in the city

then suddenly the farm

looked so much better

as memory dimmed

those days recalled were bittersweet

as they remembered

all the family did together

working side by side

all the laughter

all the good times

molding their character

into who they would become

grounded in a basic goodness

it made it all seem so much better

we are creatures of envy

until we get what we want

then the shine goes off

and we realize what we desire

is not necessarily what we need

happiness is in the present

you must love what you are now

there is truth in that old adage

things always look better

looking back.

Hi dk - a clear, uncomplicated, true, true write. A counter voice to the thinking that people who live the whole of their life in some country backwater are to be distained as having somehow 'missed out'.
Thanks
