Images of a High Tide

harbour entrance swell

river bridge

above the beach

the scraping rattle

millions of stones

sucked off the beach

returning to the sea

beside the harbour wall

crossing waves

rearing waves

joining

breaking in foam

crashing

onto the shingle

the vast pull

of the receding sea

the undertow of sound

the bay

grey brown sea

under a blue sky

Summer Seascape

In the sun's mid-day heat

I see the tall field grasses flow, swell

and come towards me in waves

surging before the day's wind

the seed-head spume constantly bowing

seems to fall on the field strand where I stand.

The rhythmic onslaught of the waves

continues through the long afternoon -

a tide of wind-driven swells and rollers

always flowing to my feet, w...

The Lost Girl

entry picture

A lost soul

not so bright

never done wrong

but not always right

Lost in the woods

in her dazzling mood

going against the world

she thought she could

I heard she was sad

maybe she lost her dad

in early age

she got trapped in a cage

Society used to tell her

what she had to be

but she never believed

and went after her dreams

I...

Late September Morn

I, dreamlost,

wake

to golden leaves of beech

sunlit

from my bed

as airdew clouds over the hedge

rise and vanish

as the eastern horizon above the valley

is lost, sunk

beneath dawndrifts of mist

not yet warmed to fade

beneath the clear blue sky;

the uncut grass of the dew-wet lawn,

droplet bent:

cool promise as

I, barefooted,

explore

the cusp of the...

The wave behind the wave

From beyond the far horizon arc

travelling travelling calmly on

to swell gently across a sea

until the deep corals

are left far behind

and the seabed

rises sloping up

to meet land

forcing us

to turn

to curl

to break

to surge

to rattle stone

to shape sand

our strength waining

retreating quietly beneath

the wave behind our wave

a curling s...

The Land of a Giant

Between the dark Ystwyth and the angry sea

We walked the cold stone beach

From the swirling river mouth

To the striated rocks beneath the southern cliff

Their upended strata pointing the way across Tan y Bwlch

Beyond the town beneath its northern cliffs

A Celtic god watches and menaces

Black Lugus on Pen ddinas Maelor:

We brave his fierce storms which shade our day

Newport, Rhode Island

Crisp air cuts through my skin, like paper to skin

the warmth of the sun

heats the metal of the railing below my hand,

holding steady to the rough current below.

Ropes of green curl below the surface,

peeking through the waves,

currents whip past the haul,

my soul opens to the depths as I look out.

Past the cobbled staircase surrounding the light house,

Gower

The sand was always hot

beside the white dunes and the coarse grass

The sea was always blue

between the black rocks and the horizon haze

The beach was always ours

between the seagull shout and the distant crowd

We were always alone

between the far world and our near union

We swa...

Beachcombing

The beach was filled with people

From all walks of life

Congregating in phenomenal numbers

On a patch of sand the size of a handkerchief

Children ecstatic, content for hours

Whatever you wish to see, you'll find it on the beach

The suicidal waterside, windsurfer

Sporty types, persevering with their shuttlecocks

Vain bathing beauties baring almost all

In the hope of them ...

Dunes...

And then the sand flowed like the tide

Shifting the land at the wave edge of the sea

A vast striated plane of drifting whirling grains:

Aged dunes lost to the wail will of the wind.

As we walked close by the sea suck and ripple

The bound beach rose and swallowed our grounded feet

We seemed to be free floating sand cloud high

In the sandsmoke drifts rushing to their...

Solitaire

Solitaire

I walk alone across a pale beach

at midnight, lit by shaky moonlight

reflected from the black ribs

of disturbed sea-shallows. A sharp breeze

beckons from the dunes; inviting warmth,

with duplicitous intent. My ease is not available

for casual enticement.

No, I seek a place of peaceful aloneness

where sloughing sand is my choice,

and possibilit...

The Sea Dog

“Jon!”

He shouts at the top of his lungs

 I scurry

Awkwardly

Through soggy sand

Tripping over sea-softened

Splitting wooden posts

In my eagerness to see what’s happened

“What is it Dad?”

“What’s happened?!”

I stop.

Puffing and panting

Squinting

Against the sun

I see him

Sat on the sand

Looking flabbergasted

Pointing away

Towards the sea

The Peaceful Beach

There's nothing that can beat
Walking along the beach
With the waves hitting your feet
In the scorching heat

Miles of soft, golden sand
I run some through my hand
Waves splashing against the shore
Is a sound that I adore

Feeling the warm breeze
Puts me at such ease
I tilt my head up towards the sun and smile
And close my eyes for a while

This beach is my paradise
Its tranquility...

Sitting beside the sea

I like to sit beside the sea
And close my eyes just enough,
That I can say I'm here alone
I pretend I'm the last human,

All my troubles drift away,
It into the waves endless repeat
Its slow certainty comforts me,
My senses leave on the tide,

The freedom I seek
Comes from living
On a small island

Where I must keep every thought
Every action packed in the land,
They get stepped on...

On Scarborough Beach

This beach experience has nothing to do with Yorkshire, except its name!  And yes, it does get that hot.

On Scarborough Beach

flash dry fades

in the turn of the world,

a shield of furnace flame

    as callous sears

        your flickering city

where dance of sea-glint,

        fixed near

and cannily coast-wise

Eight O'Clock

Eight o'clock looks better with blue tinted sunglasses.

The sunset is redder, the sea loses its grey,

People become mere shadows in the softening light.

It is calm.

I sit and wait for him.

Curling my bare feet into the sand.

Shadows catch their reflections in my eyes

Seeing only themselves and a lonely girl.

The waves melt away the metal casings of my heart;

Ocean Love

entry picture

I picture you swimming in a beautiful ocean
Your body moving gracefully against the waves
Mermaids coming out to take hold of your beauty
Dolphins singing as you swim to shore.

Walking across the sunny beach
Every step you take, the sand becomes roses
Every time you breathe, the wind slows down,
Such a magical sight to behold.

If I had the courage of the sun
I would make you mine tonight

Un-Shore

Still at shore with the weight of gaffes around my dreams

Afraid to set a course

At odds with all but how it seems

Perception sits on the thrown of what is

What is not cannot stand to the claims of what should be

With demise almost a certainty

Almost - becomes the theme that moves me

Fastened to procrastination

Circumventing the truth

Giving ear to assumptions

Off the...

The Poetess

The Poetess

It was the twelfth
Of the twelfth
and
She searched for
10 different ways
To say the same thing
Wrote 9 down
Pondered on 8
Chose the best 7
At 6 she thought she was complete
Then decided to use the first 1

In her pursuit to find
The perfect muse
Move away from the vacuous norm
She travelled
Sojourned many less-trodden shores
Met a rainbow of natives
Wi...

WHAT'S AFOOT, OR PERHAPS, A'PAW

What’s a’foot, or perhaps, a’paw?
The doggy population just continues to grow.
One, two, three four legged ‘friends’, stretchy leads a’tangle.
Dogless people do beware, those sniffing noses approach, at the right angle.
Leaping up to a gent, aiming straight at the lap
For ladies wearing mini’s they don’t need a map

It all adds to humankind’s woes
Who’s in charge?  When we see that al...

PORTREATH

entry picture

(This poem is dedicated to the select members of the S.A.S. .... Surfers Against Sewage)!

I’m just swimming in Portreath

Just going through the 'motions'

A large environmental car thief

Made of a thousand witches potions

I’ve streaming eyes and raspy throat

A throbbing head and aching ear

The only safe place is a boat

I’d never write “Wish you were here!”

WHERE DONKEYS' POO

entry picture

Suncream, Sandwiches, Sea and Sand

Warm sheltered rock-pools on the beach

This British green and pleasant land

Where Donkeys'  poo and Seagulls' screech

Grandad’s hanky on his head

His rosy cheeks a shade of peach

His Daily Mirror long since read

Where Donkeys' poo and Seagulls' screech

Grandma’s at Bingo every night

Her handbag with her like a leech

The Beach: My Remedy

it's just before sunset when loneliness creeps in

the beach is my remedy

the ocean will let me be sad
but only enough to shed a few tears,
never enough to let me drown

the wind invites me in when no one else has thought to
the lazy waves take their time rolling up

the toddlers mix mud, as their parents hold a conversation

the older couple holds hands like they're still in love

their golden retriever ba...

BEACH FIGHT

There was a fight down at the beach today

Much to my horror and surprise

A large crowd stood there watching it

I could not believe my eyes

I saw a man who had a stick

Proceed to beat his wife

Blow on blow and on her head

To an inch within her life

The frenzied crowd just screamed for more

With a loud and raucous din

I got there as the Police turned up

And...

A seagull cries above

I look up to see it soaring

its stark outline against the blue sky

singing songs of the sea

eyes half closed against the glare

cast by the sun's rays on the incoming surf
