Low Winter Son

I kick away the leaves
uncover the carved stones
And reading your names again
I let those feelings flood in

The two of you rest together
laid deep beneath the earth
There’s a tree that grows above you
and here’s me, treading my own winter

Life was in wealth, awhile
but I’ve been chasing that warmth
for three decades now
I’m tired and my body aches

There will be fireworks tonight
...

Living the 1950's

I don’t remember

   the 1950’s.

But I spent

   4 months and,

   15 days,

   living in the 1950’s.

At least I’m told I did.

My parents got me there,

   before moving

   to the 1960’s.

All I know

   of the 1950’s,

   is grainy,

   distant,

   and black and white.

Dad quiffed,

   Mum elegant,

   caught happy,

   in...

Under The Old Whale Bones

If you can find your way back here
let’s meet
under the old whale bones
this place that we each love
Where we look out to sea
or back towards the sleeping town

One day, we’ll stand together
and unbeknownst to us
it will be
for the last time in our lives

Whichever of us, must go first
let’s make a promise to meet again
under the old whale bones
Hearts filled with feeling
and the b...

Don't let me forget

I am scared I will forget you.
Forget your voice.
Forget your face.
Forget your smell.
Forget each moment.
I walk on with my heart lodged in my throat. Wondering when it will make me choke.
But how can I choke on a broken heart?
It's been in pieces since we have been apart.

How Did It Get So Late So Soon?

How Did It Get So Late So Soon?

The man who scared the ghosts away,

The woman who healed wounds with a kiss,

I think of them more nowadays

In sad and troubled times like this.

No longer there to hug the pain

From tired bones and broken hearts,

To shield you from the winter rain

That permeates where old age starts.

The back garden is over-grown,

The kitchen i...

Facebook is full of futility;
pandemic emotional ping pong
vapid mini Directors spouting “truth”
proving a point to the other side

The class divide is dividing us,
fuelled by media-driven Morgans
who needs to create division to thrive
pointless pricks with absent minds
Propaganda piloted, spoon-feeding

Humans walk past Joe the homeless,
humming on their way into work
happily stil...

Midnight At The End Of Time

They say it will soon be over

That it's just a teenage thing

They dont know what they're saying

Last night I gave you my ring

Its like I'd known you forever

We seem to go back to Creation

To the shrine of Adam and Eve

We send our invitation

Midnight at the end of time

Midnight at the end of time

I'll love you at least until

Midnight at the end of time

Little Baby

Watching you grow
brings joy to our eyes
You’ve got your Daddy
to make you smile
and your Mama
to hold you tight
while you sleep at night
we'll make everything alright

First a crawl, walk, then run
O, to watch you grow is so much fun
From your first skinned knee
a little kiss will make you believe
we’ll be right here whenever you need

Years will pass
but this love will al...

Pillars of Creation

Looking out to look inside
I see you both
the pillars of creation
above me, before me
deft hands
painting me into existence
with hands of love

Across all time
beyond the sky
my gratitude expands eternally
into a space that doesn’t yet exist
hand above my heart
your two hearts all over my art
the hands of love

Should you ever leave
you’ll never leave me
the pillars of creation

The Almost Child

I remember exactly the spot

the place I sat

when she told me

I remember the cooling coffee

forgotten

when I was told

I remember the uncertainty

in her voice

when she told me

but

I remember how I smiled

the joy I felt

when I first knew

my almost son

PRECIOUS PARENTS

From A to Z,

And from zero to infinity.

You feed me with education everyday.

Holding my hands,

You guide me to get my hands,

On my handwriting copy tracks.

Singing the rhymes together,

I start to open my mouth

With you, Teacher.

By your class and homeworks,

And checking them with red pen.

You edited my mistakes.

Your stick and sit-ups,

I loathe, but...

Who breaks a Butterfly upon a Wheel?

In that first perfect summer, that summer of love

when rifles bloomed and we turned on

and so nearly dropped out

in that year we met

and in the sun

we loved

despite clouds

that threatened us

and sought to break our love

a sad weight of parental love turned on

our first perfect summer, our first summer of love

In that first perfect summer, that summer of love

The Young Lovers

Their voices harshly clash

and will not lie calmly

or rest in our ears

in peace

They rise loud over all else

and do not fall to our key

but strike out at us

in dissonance

Our song is raised joyously

and the harmonies sing

of the love we know

in concert

We have our air so their words

smash and fall to the ground

they do not stay in sight

The Future

a professor asked me

what i wanted to do with my life,

the quesiton caught me wrong-footed;

two decades ago

learning to walk,

a decade ago

learning my body,

discovering love,

accepting my body

accepting who i am

and now?

thrust into the unknown,

an oblivion that teases me;

The Close

Grey bin days

Ash spilling

Sparking

From beneath

Buckled

Loose-fitting metal lids

Carried back- breakingly

To the monstrous wagon

Limping it’s way

Around the close

Like a club-footed relic

Behind the chipped

Leaded glass of number thirteen

A terrible gargoylian face

Pressed up close

Stares out

Mrs Ashall has seen a football fly over her neat ...

Girl in the Spotty Dress

Little girl in the spotty frock,

Did she love you then or not?

What did you do to make it change?

Why were you so very strange?

Why did you not do as you're told?

Always needed an extra scold.

Never behaved at home or school,

Always the one who acts the fool.

Never able to conform,

Always the one full of scorn.

Still the girl in the spotty frock?

Does...

Caravan holiday

Away from the city

The town

It's 'nice' districts

And 'not so nice'

Is where I find you

And Dad

Even though you've been gone

For over a decade.

You'd rummage round the big market

in Fleetwood

Drink tea, coffee

Toasted teacakes

From a local cafe

Staffed by friendly ladies

With time on their hands

Got up to look like maids

In an old Victorian cou...

He's there

1.He’s there

He's there
He's always there
Good or bad,
usually bad
He's there

He's there
Patient as ever
Sees the good,
the bad and the ugly
He's there

He's there
Do I deserve him?
Never
What if he wasn't there?
But, he's there

He's there
I am nowhere
wandering in the dark
Do I appreciate it?
Not enough, but he's there

He's there
No idea
Why he hasn't

The Making Of A Worker

The Making Of A Worker.

The lorry tips its rubble

On the road outside our house,

the privet hedge engulfed

in a primordial cloud of dust,

it drives away in chugging glee

having spilled its heavy load

and we stand and watch it go

as the carbon mountain settles.

The sergeant-major father

barks his orders at the troops

and our little hands clasp tight

the...

Quoth Both

My daughter brought a Jackdaw in the house

And grief introduced itself

Melancholic and wounded

It hunched in the corner of the room

She fed him her loving eyes

Bread in tweezers

And named him Poe

Then this sanctuary

Took him

She phoned every night

He was mending well and with the magpies...

He was in the biggest aviary...

He was set free.

But w...
