Love Left Rusting In The Rain

It boded well in summer

Blue skies and endless sun

When love adds sheen to

Bright days of endless fun

Seasons change like people

Happiness replaced by pain

Dark skies hiding sunshine

Love left rusting in the rain

Whispers like soft breezes

Promises of undying bonds

Magic painting hot dry air

Like fairies waving wands

Easy to envisage our bliss

Blow wind blow

Strong powerful it hit the shores, sea waves crashed over sea walls

Powerful determined to be free. Death total rising trees falling.

Thunder lightening flashing the sky. Tin cans and dust bins pass by.

This storm out to destroy everything in its path and beyond tonight.

Rain lashing down, drains can't take this water, we have floods now

Its worse than a monsoon feels like a TV f...

The Sterling Castle, 1703

The sands move

brushed by moray tale

shivered in clouds

by a sole's shy shift

the currents stir

shaking silt

to mist the sea

to settle -

moving time

over an old log reel,

clearing the centuries

discovering old timbers:

dead ribs

reaching up to past waves

offering their history

to the naked shipworms.

As the crabs scuttle to explore

as stars cree...

Good for You

Good for you,
    found your flow.
Good for you,
    got that healthy glow.
Good for you,
    navigating storms like a willow.
Good for you,
used your pain as fuel to grow.
Good for you,
    no more living on tiptoe.
Good for you,
no longer afraid of the scarecrow.
Good for you,
    escaped the tornado.
Good for you,
    found your rainbow.
Good for you,

The Sailors' Homecoming

There is a time

channel mists behind, we sit at anchor for the tide

then in the early hours the Thames pilots board

and - slowly for the mist still lingers close to land -

we move up river reaches, take tugs and find our lock

to gently nudge our way between the barges

until we are tied up again in Albert's dock,

derricks swung and hatches open -

and I am free

Again,...

Storm Watcher

He watched the leaves float

in the pond

windmoving on the surface

drop-pitted by rain,

leaves, orange-brown against the black depths

He watched the leaves stick

to the patio

wetgluing to the slate

slickened by the storm,

leaves, orange-brown against the black stone

He watched the leaves move

Write HOPE on your arm!

In the recent storms and typhoons, I heard advice from US police to people not evacuating to write theirnames on their arms as it might be the only way to identify them.  This somewhat brutal advice inspiredthe following rather apocalyptic poem - if you look closely I hope you can find a message of hope!

Run for the Hills

Write your name upon your arm,

On your sleeve tattoo you...

The Navigator

Once I plotted my course

on nautical charts -

I used the sun and stars

to fix

                my position in the world

Once my ship sailed the seas

by my compass course -

I drew lines on a map

to guide

me through far off seas to port

Once I was the pilot

steering from the bridge -

But she altered my course

loving

Adrift

They see me

Without a word

Through the sea white mist

Slow silent slip away

They see me

An empty vessel

Adrift from my moorings

Fading to the horizon

To move, like night, from sea to sea

They see me

Haze distanced

Lost to all and love

Hull down, alone

Eternally to drift

To tide or current whim

Sometime becalmed

Drifting

Sometime storm blasted

Winter Town

This is my vision of a certain cast of English village (not so much in springtime).

Winter Town

March winds stir listless eddies,

fluke in tired gusts over thin pools,

flare through fields of stubble

then flag, exhausted, sour and wheezing

from the blowing day;

coughing, rubbing arthritic fingers,

cold as a church bell sounds the hours.

Spring will be late this...

Three Haiku

Where sea and sky meet

a green flash from the set sun

Lighting distant shores

In Spring my compass

                navigated the world round

Now Autumn tides ebb

In the Winter storms

my old life invades the new

Waves crash past the strand

Grey Skies

Shades of grey paint happy faces on my thoughts

As the cool breeze sets my mind on chill

Flashes of light brightens the beyond

If only for a moment

And that moment sits and simmers for a lifetime

I’m at the most calm when there’s rain drops

When everything else slows down

And the dust in the air dissipates

Senses are charmed by those rain drops

Inhibitions lose thei...
