I missed this piece also, first posted. It wholly deserves the honour. Your insights and the ability to share them are striking. Intimacy is hard to capture, but you have cut straight to the core with the scene between you and your mother. Depth of thought and an eye for the particular that defines a moment are the gifts of a real poet - the killing details that score deep into the mind and heart. It takes both 'targets' to make a really impactive poem.
Add to that - innate skill with words, a mind full of searching questions and the sincerity of related wisdom - and you are a young man who is going to love writing all your life.
And be well-known and beloved, if that is your goal. If not, write simply for your own happiness.
Sorry, you'll never be bored. You might as well accept that now, and get on with stuff.

We used to have a our own business until the recession hit and the balifs ended up on the doorstep because we couldn't pay the bills
Now I'm working for minimum wage
In our town there are dozens of people living on the streets
The NHS and police force need more money
I don't want to emigrate, I like living in this country.
All I want is to see the money go to the right places.

this subtly tickles the edges of several modern day dilemmas and raises a giggle or two along the way. Clever writing. Is there usually so much pent-up sexual tension at unprogrammed Quaker meetings? I've only ever had one brush with Quakers and that was at a funeral which was mainly silent except for a few people who stood up at random moments to say something nice about the deceased. Col.

"Everywhere people sleeping on the street
Too many families with nothing to eat."
A true picture you do depict,
Our future prospects have been nicked.
"People from other countries are desperate to come here to live,"
Soon we will have nothing left to give.
We are living on a sinking ship,
Lets move to the moon and enjoy our trip.

The UK is one of the wealthiest nations of the world, with high levels of education and health. We have freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to worship any god we choose or to worship none. People from other countries are desperate to come here to live, so much so that we have to control immigration and are leaving the EU to achieve this.
Andrew for pity's sake I wish you and all the other moaning minnies would stop talking this country down. If you dislike it so much you are perfectly entitled to emigrate to one of the other 27...or try further afield.

Jade, this is a writing site, not purely poetry,. I believe in writing as a form of healing, in fact I've got part of a degree that studies writing as healing. But Brian, is right you are very open doing this. Our local theatre has a drama group/writing group for younger people are there any groups near You?? . Also have you tried the app, or website Heads Together headed by non other than Prince Harry who has also suffered from depression. ....... ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The job of a critic is not to know more than their intended audience (often far from the case, it seems) - but to
entertain them with wit and opinions that make that
audience pay attention to the product under "review".

There's various ways of saying "gotcher!"
To many an eager-beaver watcher
But when you're not far off a nipper
You won't hear it from a strutting stripper.
JC - I can easily imagine the erotic appeal of the outfit
filled with just the right amount of content. There must
have been many tight trousers in the front row!

Enjoyable in a number of ways - not least for the welcome
use of rhyme to tell an all too recognisable tale of our times.
But all things change, I guess, and it's only when achieving
certain milestones in life that we really begin to see how
much has been lost from our previous lives, not always for
the better, it has to be said. Progress is a "partially
favoured" thing!

Lazarus Candles. Nicely put. Apply a spark - arise up o candles. Perhaps 'suspended animation' not death ?
Thought I'd better post something to let you know I do have a serious side. We're not all plebs down here. Was it Hazel bemoaning the fact she didn't get a chuckle from a recent post of yours? As explained we do have serious hats needing to be worn from time to time. I shall endeavour to return to my comedic roots soon.

They're not really dead though are they Don? The saying 'you're a long time dead' doesn't really apply to candles.
I guess they're Lazarus Candles.

And sometimes they have to milk You for money! I went to see male strippers at a night club one new years eve. Ha. This was in the 90s, I had my drinks bought for me so only paid for the ticket in. We also reacted differently as women we giggled and laughed. They'll be in their 60s now. Ha.
