Come Winter
When will it be that it’s my time to go?
I see all the signs in the air.
Must I wait through storms til there’s nothing but snow,
or is there a milder path there?
When I was young, I never spent time
nor took any thought just to sit by and think.
I guess there was no need when weather was fine,
but seasons have passed in a blink.
But somehow there’s comfort her...

Once upon a time in a vest
There’s a shoot-out on the bowling green
The pianola’s full of holes
The Man with No Name’s
Got a Zimmer frame
And a tray of sausage rolls
He’s a High Plains drifter
Not from round here
The strong and silent type
Got a dance partner, can’t lift her
They practice moves on Skype
At the monthly hoedown
At the nursing home
He wears a felt ten-gallon hat
It’s ...

Faded Pictures
Pathetically and silently, she sat
In her chair, a frail old lady
Neither showing emotion nor self-pity
Rejected and ignored by the family she conceived,
Their faded pictures are framed on her wall.
But they are not coming soon.
Certainly not this week.
Their lives are now at such a pace.
There is no recognition that hers is concluding.
She sat
A miserable, life-sca...

Wraith
Wraith
We all reach that point in life
Where Halloween holds no magic
The ragged clothes and haggard looks
The pale of face and wrinkled mask
The wild unkempt hair of cobwebs
The brittle touch of ancient hand
The racing heartbeat
Pounding out its horror rhythm
The nervous look into dark corners
Death waiting across the grey veil
A cold sweat and night chi...

Aching All Over
Aching All Over
My back aches and my head aches
And my eyes ache in bright light
My arms ache and my hands ache
When I go to bed at night
But when anybody asks me
I just say that ‘I’m alright’
Aching All Over
My ears ache when I listen
To those heavy metal hits
My stomach aches after a curry
My arse aches after the shits
My toes and fingers ache
As ...

That Which Autumn Leaves (REPOST with Audio)
something for Halloween and Autumn
That Which Autumn Leaves
The clowns were funny in the ring,
as they joked and tumbled and fell -
but in the camp, after the show,
they made our young lives hell.
Still in their masks of garish paint
and drunk on Vodka shots,
they cut and bruised and beat us,
hatching cruel, twisted plots.
I never saw the demons
lurkin...

Notes in the Margins of a Lover’s Poem
Slightly runny yolks with sizzling edges
Komodo freshly brewed to bold perfection
Heavenly scents waft through our place
I oversleep; you don’t judge; instead, you
cook my eggs just the way I like them.
Slow dances in our socks on kitchen tiles
Bike rides under shady oaks for miles
Beach picnics, candlelit and sunset-kissed
The breeze blows out our candles; you try
rel...

Growing Old Disgracefully
I want to grow old disgracefully and drive all my carers crazy,
I’ll swing from the chandeliers, I’ll overfill the bath,
Then blame it on my dementia whilst I stand there and laugh. I want to climb the rafters and play hide and seek,
I never want my bones to grow old, frail and weak,
I want to make the children laugh and ...

A Step Towards Winter
A STEP TOWARDS WINTER.
I look into the mirror’s depthless space
and note the wrinkles that, somehow have grown
into something I wish I didn’t own.
The knife of age has cut into my face.
The greys within my hair have moved apace
from where the bird of youth had lightly flown
to make a nest of life that it could own.
I wish it hadn’t sprinted in that race.
