That’s right, Stephen. At Moscow, Coe and Ovett won each other’s events.
The Coe-Ovett thing was an athletics version of The Beatles-Rolling Stones thing of the 60’s.

Hi Jennifer. Yes, you are correct in your seasonal surmise. SAD. Spent Setember in Florence once upon a time. So much more light. Here in the North of England it is 04.32pm and nearly dark. I take succor in the fact that we are all subject to "l'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle" Duarante degli Alighier.
All good wishes
John

Your poem brought back so many wonderful moments, John. I saw Sebastian Coe break the world mile record in Brussels in the early 1980s. As you say, he just seemed to flow, without effort. In the end, it was odd that he won his two Olympic golds at the 1500m rather than 800m, which was his best event.

Not all that cheerful, I admit, John. But we have to cover all parts of life's rich tapestry, I suppose. Milk, no sugar.

Thanks, Ray. My original which I decided not to post had three other verses. But I thought they were weak. Also I tried to capture the sense of banging our heads on a brick wall by repeating the same message.
I have since decided that the 5th line of this is also too weak. I am minded to replace it with “This future is ours” rather than “This issue is shared”.

Seems to me too, that often more attention is paid to the perpetrator, awful childhood, broken home, jailed, unemployed etc., than to the victim and their families. Thanks also for the likes and kind comments on my stuff!

Simply beautiful. Loved 'the hem of night is chasing us'. Also although it is about death, it isn't sad or gloomy, but the love and affection in it comes out in spite of the topic. Quite an achievment.

Great read, and a nice turnaround that the spider is trapped in his own web. 'To vaporize my mind with elation', describes so well being in love, and the last two verses are touching.

Somehow gather you don't like autumn?!! Hope you feel a little less depressed later on. Here in Italy there is so much more sun, even in winter that the weather rarely gets one down. Beautifully written anyway, really describes how you feel.
Try to think more like Betjemann's Church Mouse!

There's a saying about there being a time and place for everything - and I have often thought that this should be a
source of comfort and hope in life. Too much emphasis is
placed upon expectations of great things from the young.
They only know what is discovered from books or is taught to
them. The creative ability is rare indeed, so rare that it is often
placed in the category of "gifted" or "genius".

Thanks for reading and liking Holden.
Thanks Stephen A. I remember an old joke asking the difference between outlaws and inlaws, the answer being that outlaws are wanted. That was in the back of my mind!
Graham, I think there is often a sort of guardedness in mingling on the inlaw footing; sometimes a halo and a crucifix can help.
Glad you liked it !
I'm glad that worked for you Stephen G. It's that desire for a rhyming ending always has me trying.

Hello Keith, fantastic autumn poem on Poetry Plus. Really enjoyed the beautiful language. I started WOL in 2017, and most of us have come on a great deal since then, I think. Found a poem new to me today. Titles, by John Richardson, whom I didn't know. It's not in the least pedantic. even though he was a Victorian poet, andvery amusing. Keep up the good work.
All the best, Jennifer
