This is so sad but true. Governments have not come to terms with the idea that everyone needs a decent home to live in.
Thank you for writing this .

Very succinctly put in all its gory detail. The final two lines are an excellent punch line. You have highlighted clearly a disgusting 'trade in rentals'.

And, also, the personal habits of certain people. Many young persons treat their parents' home like a pigpen. And they are allowed to do so. How would you expect them to treat their 'first pad'? It boggles the mind.

Who should be held responsible for 'letting any living space' in this condition, especially the common area like the toilet, dripping ceilings in any area, etc. ? The good news must be that the room itself can be cleaned, and the fridge etc. with a lot of personal effort, yes, but still cleaned.

I often feel real sorry for landlords. Those who rent have responsibilities too. And many don't give a shit about how they treat a rented place. 'Who cares? It's not mine!'

Harry, make a quick check for a couple of typo's in the final stanza. You were probably dashing the deadline:

'blessed' - such a beautiful word. They are all 'beautiful words' in this poem.

and

'its knee' without an apostrophe, just because it is a page poem and you're a great writer with a fine reputation.

Thanks to Nigel and Desmond for liking. Thanks also to David, Colin and Wardah for your comments.
I agree with you Colin about the term gastro pub. I think I used it because I simply don't like. Oh for the days of a simple meal that's just about taste and not just about the way its presented.
Thanks for your comments David. I felt I had to be honest about where I am at as I could be construed as being a bit of a hypocrite in some parts of my life some things sit more comfortably than others. Which is probably true for all of us.
enough of my ramblings
Thanks once again to one and all for reading its nice to be appreciated for what I put out there.
Cheers chaps
Martin

I think JB would have been as curious as he always was.
Numbers of Brits took themselves to other lands in history
and stayed/departed in their turn. It seems wholly
appropriate that their counterparts from those lands
should make their way here to stay/depart in their own turn - and add their experiences to the accounts.

Posterity will surely be the beneficiary of this far-sighted
idea. And how appropriate that it should be in the capital
city of the country whose own language has supplanted
so many others to become the lingua franca of the world.

To misquote words to the tune from a famous old TV theme song - and in keeping with the above JC spoof-truth.
"Aye, aye, aye, his feet are mazy,
So cool, they're shooting everywhere;
Aye, aye, aye, he drives 'em crazy,
Kane is able - no need to share!"
(ref. "Sucu Sucu" - theme from Top Secret).
It's great to know that England has a
player of truly international quality.

Thanks Martin for your point of view. I think we all would like to reverse some of those punitive decisions - hundreds of thousands of jobs lost as Betjeman point out. Sometimes I wonder which end of the pantomime donkey makes decisions in politics. Just for the record, I tried to split the poem into two and "go backwards" with the lines , wasn't entirely possible but the spirit I think was there.

Much appreciated.

The final 'thought' made me gasp with a little pain; it was the word 'eternal'. Made me want to say 'Not likely!' And I felt mean-spirited, when the 'writer' was trying to be so positive. And I'm thinking: 'She hasn't learned a thing from past experience.'

Therefore, a good poem, embracing a very important theme.

Love it - YES! - just love it. I wonder if the reader needs a 'bit' of musical background; but maybe not. The spirit would still come through strongly, regardless. It is the 'spirit' of the work that is so delightful.
