I absolutely agree with Louise (above)!
Good stuff: this poem's like a good short film script - succinct with plotpoints 1, 2, 3 and a powerful punchline.

too many solu seekers in the world today.talking of heaven and hell with so much conviction that one would be forgiven for thinking that they have been there already.the poem's universality is striking!i live and work in zimbabwe.am a zimbabwean who has been harangued also by these holier than thou people.this poem reminds me of this woman who tried to convert my dad to her christianity when he was on his death bed and could hardly comprehend the warped questioning that he was subjected to.spare me!

c) Asking half a pound of cherry tomatoes how they'd like to be dressed?

Needs saying Mal well done, of course Islam is not alone in providing fundamentalist zealots the power to rule by intimidation and superstition. I had a fair amount of that from the Christian Brothers. Let's all pray for an end to religion.

I guess Sophie I am a believer in the spirtual although I am not sure I believe in a conventional God I think any God would be very much beyond the conventional and may well see beyond Good and evil or positive and negative as I like to call them as the God that I believe knows our actions and why even we didn't them (causality).

But ultimately this poem was meant as a kind of text poem for people who find hope and meaning in the everyday books lyrics in songs etc and make their own way in the world and their own philopsophy!

HI, Daniel

Yes you can find answer to each of these questions. Your poem is deep and has a spiritual tone in it!

"Can you find hope in times of madness?
to bring you through your despair
can you find strength and guidance
in the books over there
can you find faith
in actions good works and deeds done"

There is always a solution to each problem. Your poem shines. Very profound and thought provoking...Thank you for sharing...Zuzanna

I love what you wrote on Zuzannas profile about the Doors, I think Jim Morrisons is certainly one of the best poet and songwriters of the 21st century - good to have some one who recognises such talent - good luck with your work - I look forward to reading more of your poetry.

Hello Richard,

Such life. You have expressed life as it happens.
Floor can get that way at times. It is strong commanding poem.

"fearing my life I did as she said
later, she called me into the lounge
and with a strong voice
"look at that floor!"
what is wrong I asked?
suckering suckatatz! its unholy and unhomely,
to which I sensationally replied
"look at that floor!"

Interesting twist in the conversation.
Thank you...Zuzanna

The beauty of reading any good poem for the first time that it flows almost effortlessly. I didn't have to re-read as i was reading for the first time. The words just flowed, nothing jarred and it was an altogether, pleasant reading experience. Beautiful.

Hi - I read this as a sort of death. Although i do seem to have a fixation for it at the moment!
"These are your guests,
Set me a place,
Though I may be a while"
It's as if a soul has been guided toward heaven by yourself or another. The acceptance that heaven or an afterlife exists and the resignation that you too will perhaps one day be with them.
Excellent poem Richard

Thankyou Zuzanna and Mel for your comments on my poem.

I wrote this poem because as humans we often punish ourselves, beat ourselves up about the most trivial of things, and we are only hurting ourselves and in the process I feel that this takes us further away from out true self, and we can become detached from others'.

Thank you again

Hi Honey, I hate myself for this as I'm always wittering on about the genius of young people but I was shocked to see your pic as I figured that poem was written by a much older man, please don't take that as an insult - I think it's cause the character in the poem seems so much older - I don't know I think maybe because of all the religous references in some ways I pictured Jesus talking to Mary Magdelain. I look forward to reading your other stuff - I just read this poem again and every time I find something new in there which is the mark of a good poet!
Good luck with it all.xxx

Simple Mal

Leave yr family, don't buy a tree, don't eat turkey, stay up all night, don't share your house with a donkey, avoid the path of dusky potentates (and the camel shit), and don't celebrate anything involving other people. A perfect recipe for mid-winter contentment. Most of it's worked for me (other than the other people bit)
