Fantastic poem by John - 'crazed forgettings', 'autopsy scar on the belly of the country'. And Martha - 'Each at each other, one of us forever.' Worthy winners both. Well done.

They say "money talks" and sometimes I think (especially
in consideration of our wonderful but fast fading countryside) that we should ignore its jabber.
David - some words from my own past come back to me:
Cynicism is the last resort of idealism. And, no, they weren't from the inimitable Oscar Wilde!

Hey, Colin! I was feeling so serious last evening that I had to have a little laugh. The first time I watched that movie, I almost fell out of my chair, I laughed so hard.

I came up with part of the title after remembering an incident with a nurse connecting me to an IV. Somehow, she lost grip of the tube she'd stuck in my arm after removing the cap at it's female end and gave out a nervous laugh when it began to flail about like a tiny fire hose. Well, the rest of the title is me laughing with her.

Anyhow, the movie makes a great statement about religion and the fickle fascinations of man. Man and his myths remain archaic, no matter how modernized they seem on the surface. And, I firmly believe that the only reason the church isn't still burning people at the stake is that its violence is no longer state-sanctioned and it has to convince converts into its control rather than being able to legally coerce them through overt measures.

Hope you laughed as much as I did,

Rachel

PS
Glad you enjoyed, David.

Just seen this for the first time Steve. It gets life by the balls and squeezes and brings a tear forth. I especially respect the idea of kicking in the TV and the lines leading up to that, because I suppose TV is a sort of sop to keep our minds spongy and diverted. Bitter sweet and a very recognizable sense of scarred optimism just coming through in spite of the mood of the piece.

I feel that teachers must have also felt browbeaten by the "duties" such as writing reports and many of them as I recall were fairly sadistic. A burden conveyed no doubt to parents who were supposed to have an input too. A sorry record as you say, entertainingly written!

Hi Stephen
A great poem and I'm sure you speak for many with the sentiments you have set out so clearly.
Underneath every line of your poem simmers the yoke of "failure" which some of us have had to carry after being crushed by the waterfall of negativity poured over us at a young and impressionable age.
Thankyou for writing it and for writing it so well.

Internally vibrating, emotionally fucking penetrating

Acceptance is forced to be, eyes wide open- i see you are personally damaging to me

I've traveled along side your competition within this rat race.. Ill invite death to keep up with my continuous pace

Dead from within but my daily struggle is still faced

if trees had feelings. There's a palpable sense of having no control over one's destiny - the tree growing and spreading its arms to unwittingly become the hangman's tree - like a person locked inside their body and unable to communicate their wishes or feelings, only able in the end to watch their own slow decline. So much sorrow so very well expressed. Thanks for posting Desmond.

As David says, fragility comes across here and a sort of delicacy I feel which is the lightness of being in your poems.
It intrigues me that you specify the time so precisely, it gives the reader a sense of the immediate, as if time itself is fragile.

Thank you Ferris Colin Stu Ray and Lynn For reading and your comments . Also thanks to Kim for liking.
I wrote this after snatching a few days away with my wife in Anglesey in July. The weather was far from perfect as in the case of British summers, but it was time away from people and expectations and all the associated stuff that goes with that, so I don't particularly care about the weather.
I know what you mean about the violins section Ray. I don't always understand what I write sometimes, But it seemed to fit.
Thanks once again to you all for reading this and your encouragement
much appreciated

once again, and at the risk of repeating myself, I have to say your poems often take me back to a time and place, often in my youth when I was discovering so much about life, people, the world around me. I am now sitting in a particular bedroom in Brighton remembering a past love. Thanks Tom, but best not linger there too long!
