THE PROPERTY DEVELOPER - 2017

Present efforts to conserve the countryside around the White Cliffs (Dame Vera in action!) -

and ongoing threats elsewhere persuade me to post this current comment on today's world.

.................................................................................................................................................

What care I for gate or fence...

Come - let us talk of pounds and pence.

What care I for trees and fields...

Pray tell me what the profit yields.

What care I for bird or beast...

Unless the creatures are deceased.

What care I for the caring majority...

When I've got the ear of the local authority.

What care I for high-minded intent...

With my cossetted cronies in Parliament.

What care I for the obtuse objection

From some other who'll be gone at the next election.

My personal world finds contented conceit...

In a cash-friendly vision of cement and concrete.

And success is so sweet!

............................................................................

They say "money talks" and sometimes I think (especially
in consideration of our wonderful but fast fading countryside) that we should ignore its jabber.
David - some words from my own past come back to me:
Cynicism is the last resort of idealism. And, no, they weren't from the inimitable Oscar Wilde!

Very pithy, very true and very well expressed.
Thankyou.

I really like this poem. It shows the cynicism of those who put economics before the Environment.
