I like the surrealism of this - its circularity and the open-endedness of the narrative.

Thanks, Keith, I feel that this is a noble rallying cry to fight the urge to withdraw from life as we get older. Bravo! Well put! 😊

Thanks to M.C and Nigel for the comments. This is a snapshot of a story I know from Stockport Market some years back. The gentleman in question was a character I will say and leave it at that (:
Thanks to Steven and Holden also for the love. Means a lot you liked my little story.

Thanks Kevin.
Wrote all three just out of isolation the other day.. 10 days kinda bought these emotions out of me quite quickly. Glad you liked them.
Thanks also to Nigel, Greg, Emer, kJ and Holden. Your support as always means the world with these short pieces.

Julie,
Before abandoning batman I do think you might go in search of Robin (Boy Wonder). Incidentally should you find the Batmobile, please let me know as I am on the look out for a second hand car.
Great poem, full of mystery
Thanks,
Keith

This was set in the 70s, but as our set was about 20 years old, it could well have been the same model.

What an interesting account, Nick. Obsessed with my own little corner of Japan's second world war, I had never appreciated that the Philippines had been such a battleground, occupied only a few hours after Pearl Harbor.

A brilliant poem, Adam, which captures a traveller's indifference to what is happening in front of their eyes. A metaphor, perhaps. Wonderful poetry 😀

Yes a good diet of fillet steaks, fried mushrooms washed down with draught Guinness and topped off with a Tiramasu. Perhaps a Stilton Cheese to clean the palate.
No sense in holding back when time is running out

Thank you Adam. I have had similar ideas about poetry. I think the reason why some writers use personal info is they suppose others might relate to it but that is often not the case. I have made the same mistake too I think,

It has been reported that Prince Andrew suffers from an overblown ego. On one occasion he was said to have lost his
cool when challenged one evening in the grounds of Buck House
by security who didn't recognise him at the outset. No "Thanks
for taking the trouble to make sure who I was." Ego...that great
precursor of hubris!!

Great humour, John. I think that 'It was a convenient place to stay' (from the Newsnight interview) could become the epitath for this whole sordid affair.

Lovely poem, Julie. Yes, I suppose they are rats, in a way, but superior rats, surely (apart from the tail).
Cyril is a good name. I remember a Hancock's half hour episode where Bill Kerr says to Sid james 'It's a Cyril, squid'.

Thank you for the comments. KJ - yes, he is less than half the man he used be, although he doesn't realise for a long time! And John, the Holy Trinity - such symbolism had not occured to me but it makes perfect sense.
I wrote this poem many years ago and have revised it several times. To be honest, I am still rather baffled by it, so you are in good company, Tom!
One way of looking at it is through the story of the Emperor's New Clothes. Everyone sees that the man is cut into three but no one will tell him until his niece comes along and tells him the truth (which still leaves a number of things unexplained). So perhaps it is a parable for people's reluctance to tell an obvious truth, for fearing of being out of the step with conventional belief. Or of course it may be something much simpler!
Many thanks to John C, Keith, Binte, Julie, Stephen A., Holden and Jimakos for the likes.

This poem is skilfully composed as it is not until the last two stanzas that the reader is surprised to discover what the preamble was all about. What you have written is so very true and a call for us to take more notice of those who are not listened to. A very good poem
Thanks for this

I can easily remember our first TV back in the 1950s - obtained after much teen persuasion and plotting in the direction of our resisting parents who were of the opinion that it was a one-eyed monster that would rot our brains.. It was a Murphy 17"
model with main controls under a flip-up flap on the top. We
lived on highest ground around in our part of rural Wiltshire
and got a very acceptable signal via a VHF single-bar radio
aerial fixed to the chimney of our cottage by an older brother
as part of his lifelong interest in hi-fi audio set-ups. I do
recall the occasional "roll" of the picture and the need to fiddle
with the controls of the set in those long-ago days of glorious
blakc and white television.

We live in an age of over-stimulation, with its ceaseless demands
for our attention. There can be no "older generation" that has
seen so much change and it is to their (our?) credit that we can
still keep up (even when we can't "keep it up" (😉). Self-discipline can be required to resist the blandishments of so much
that is expected of us across the spectrum of modern life. So, my
mantra now is "moderation in all things" - with occasional
excess in what is personally enjoyable before we are claimed
by eternity! P.S. A good diet may well extend a good life!

Old 'uns will recall the nickname that was applied to the
younger Prince Andrew - "Randy Andy". I enjoyed the very
inventive use of this old pop song. And it also took me back to
an old advertising jingle for a home cleaning product called
"Handy Andy"!! - which, I seem to remember, goes something
like this:
'Handy Andy, strong little gentle man
Cleans your whole house cleaner than
A whole lot of other cleaners can.' (Sheer poetry! 😃)

Great poem Keith and if this member of the walking dead may take the liberty of adding another useful slice of advice.....
regular moderate exercise can ease the journey as opposed to vegetating in the armchair methinks
two of which are reasonably easy depending on one's capability and those are taking walks and swimming.
