Thank you, John and Keith, for commenting. I really appreciate it. Reports of the torture and mutilation of POWs are truly horrifying. I tried to pitch this at a fairly general level to avoid it being too gruesome.
And my thanks to Frederick, Julie, Stephen and Holden for liking this.

Thereβs a parched essence to this piece Greg, accurately depicting the title. Perhaps a new genre of Arid Poetry?
Drove up to Brittany yesterday in torrential rain. The bubble has burst here but gladly warm and dry today.

As a person of faith your poem articulates well the confidence that can be had in a firm belief in the Almighty. I share this belief but in a different context as a Christian.
Thank you for a poem which needs to be heard by many in today's world

Jennifer,
This nearly brought tears to my eyes as I was in Rome a couple of years ago when I met a Moroccan who was a vagrant and living in a park. Fortunately I speak Arabic so we were able to communicate. He told me his life story which was of a man rejected, confused, with failed relationships and a need for love. He was strangely handsome but his clothes were rags and he was barefoot. When I read your poem I was back in Rome listening to a story. Out in this world there are many like these who through no fault of their own are cast into poverty, the likes of which we can never know.
A poem to touch the heart strings
Thank you
Keith

As usual, Stephen, your famous poem has hit the nail on the head. Fame used to be the by product from the work one did or the role one performed. Nowadays fame, itself, is the spur!
I really want to read your advice poem, too. Go on, Stephen. Go on line ππ

A very appropriate piece. Such shocking news, and I do hope the consequences are not so dire as initially reported. Don't understand how someone can be so fanatical.

This makes me so sad. Too many people feeling frightened for the future and feeling exactly the same Iβm sure. This poem should be shared to the two candidates to discuss at their otherwise pointless bickering sessions. Take care Keith. A nice walk is always free and without prescription. π

The blunt fact is that most English people back then hated Blacks, Asians, Scots, Irish and Jews, viewing them as unwanted interlopers. Homosexuality was actively outlawed and women were second class citizens. Most middle class people saw the working classes as moronic, bovine revolutionaries. One cannot blame Larkin for his views, they were just the norm in those days. They never impinged on his art, which is the main thing.

This makes often true and very sad reading. Money Iβm afraid is the current measure of success/achievement but sadly cannot endow class and a sense of humility to the rich. One look at our royals will illustrate that perfectly.
Keith, keep a grip on what is dear to you. You have intellect which money canβt buy. Decency which also isnβt for sale. Focus on what you have!

This is my kind of poem. What a bloody bunch of morons we really are. Today I read of sunken ships in the Baltic, most the result of conflict, which on the sea bed they break apart and release vast quantities of oil which kills the fish out right. Along the banks of the River Oder nearly all the fish are now dead and washed up on the banks filled with toxic chemicals. It will take decades if ever to reverse this. A factory up river was responsible for the discharge of chemicals. We are a useless destructive force. Given paradise only to desecrate it. What hope can there be?
Thank you for this
Keith
