Ten lines of near-perfection, Ray. Beautiful and not a word wasted. Still waiting for the rain where I am.

Impossible not to like this, Bryony. The joyous aspect of the poem makes it rise above the ordinary.

With the news that Jeremy Paxman is quitting University Challenge after the next series, events related in my poem 'If Only I'd Made the Team' will now never come to pass. Maybe I should apply for the job though. This is the opening poem from my Maytree Press pamphlet 'The Taking Part', available from my website https://joewilliams.co.uk/

Thanks Tom 🙂. This is quite an old one I wrote over a decade ago that helps me relive a certain time and place (and the sweetness and rawness of it!)

When women peacefully protesting their hard-earned freedoms, (including freedom of speech) on the streets of Manchester, are manhandled ie. physically assaulted, by masked men who want to silence them; when police officers stand by and refuse to come to their defence, we are in a dark and dangerous place.

Really like this poem, particularly the brevity and metaphor. And the titular section "I am the rain—you are the soil/Without intention— we make mud" is fantastic and very effective.

Really like the quietness and solitude you’ve captured here, Keith, and the tone is great juxtaposition to the more traditional imagery of summer.

Thank you both. I don’t often write from a place of outrage but liked the result of this when I did! And sorry to hear that the wankers on the nudist beach aren’t a new challenge, Keith 😩

A poem with an unusual sensual quality which carries the reader. I particularly enjoyed the words, "My body , farts, burps and laughs" and "It shits in exultation every morning". I used to know Brighton well in my salad days. There were many wankers there then also.
A good poem which I enjoyed.
Thank you for this
Keith

Good Morning Ez,
I read with interest your personal profile which is both honest and interesting. As someone far advanced in age than yourself I found your last paragraph most interesting as self discovery is vital in all our development. It is knowing who we are first and foremost then moving out into the world and experiencing life. Self discovery has to be an honest process. I look forward to reading some of you poetry or prose in the weeks and months to come
Thank you
Keith

Thank you John and Stephen, for your kind comments. I used to work as a child and adolescent mental health nurse, so I always tried to nurture them in the way I would have liked to nurture myself at that time. 😃

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read and press the like button - it is much appreciated. Thankyou to Julie, Stephen and John for your kind comments. It is very important to me that my mother’s story and the thousands of people that suffered under these regimes are remembered.
Julie, I think the last of these places in Ireland closed sometime in the 80’s. It is all very sad. 😓

Thanks for all your incredible support Frederick, Phiip, Jennifer, Uilleam, Stephen, Holden, Clare and K. Lynn liking the poem.
Stephen, yes, this is not to be lightly!
Great, Martin, thank you so much.
Delighted that you liked this Graham. I was looking at an old notebook from 1992 a year in which I was embroiled in all sorts of marital and domestic problems. Thus the poem, but just before I put it on I re-wrote the second verse. It's one of the very few of that era that had any merit.

A beautiful sensitive piece of writing Jennifer! I couldn't help being moved by it as it elevates the status of an anonymous man by description in such loving detail. Quite outstanding , an I think Keith's comment adds extra weight to the story and fleshes it out in his own way.
