Ignoring, for a moment, that it should have been 'Seventeen pence, cash' (as any poet no) http://www.writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=7838 what a cracking poem.

Possibly the best I've read on here for many a long month. Thank you!

Heh heh - one just gets a little tired of the inevitable 'banker wanker' rhyme...

I also find a lot of it just doesn't transfer to page. It's great to find one that does :)

Having just reread this after a little more sleep, I can't eulogise enough. As well as humour, there is class in this - and beauty.

and as the winter sun
breaks through the clouds
and the windows of the City
are a seamless wall of gold,

WHAT A CRACKING DESCRIPTION!

Thanks, Anne. I was on here before but in the persona of Pop Up Poetry. I couldn't change the clown logo photo I'd originally put on and in the end deleted the whole profile to do it! I've made a group profile on here for Pop Up Poetry now - I have 71 on my Facebook group of that name but I don't know if they will join Write out Loud as well.

I shall put poems on every now and then, on the blog, though I'm wary of publishing online too much in case I want to enter a competition or submit to a publisher.

Hi Janice - a warm welcome to WOL. I loved the poem about the den! I remember friends and I had a secret society for a while. I decided to sign some message in blood but cheated and used blood from a nose bleed! (Too much info - sorry :) It'd be nice to see some of your poems on the blogs second. Hope you enjoy the site!

Beautiful Harry. Magical, mystical, classical - are there any more als I can think up?

I love it because it is so different to anything on here - so romantic (in the nicest sense), so reminiscent of the greats, so worked on, so crafted, so gentle...

And I just love the ending - the contrast between old and young and the wonder of life.

So nice to see an appreciation of woman also!

Thanks for the comment on 'When The Wind...' John;

Yes-Poole born and bred. When I grew up there it was a dirty old seaport: potteries all around, grain silos & warehouses blowing choking dust all over town,, an overhead gantry dripping black as it conveyed coal from the ships to the gasworks. In short - a proper town. As you have seen, now it has been ponced up as a tourist trap. OK to visit but not somewhere you'd want to live - although the millionaires seem to like it.

Hi Janice
A lovely, Blytonesque, piece there. It's good to see you on here. Greg speaks highly of your Guildford night and it would be interesting to hear/read more about it.

Re the photos, do you fancy adding some basic information about them: date and name of event, name of reader, etc?

You know, if you fancy creating a Pop up poetry group profile you could invite your regulars to become members, thus giving you a simple means of messaging them all, telling them of the photos, so forth.

A thought anyhow.

Cheers

Julian

I'd never heard of Poetry24, so thanks for the heads-up. I've emailed them a copy of 'No-one likes...' , but seeing as it's already been posted on my website and Facebook, (and it's more than 40 lines long!) I reckon I may fall foul of their submission guidelines...

cheers :-D

An incredible poem.

As a grown woman, I remember the time when it felt like the whole of the male population suddenly not only noticed I was there, but pretty much threw themselves at my feet. I was bemused. Same person I was yesterday, yet today I have all this power! It was spell-binding.

You've captured it from the other side Harry, and I think this is a blindingly honest and, I have to say, brave poem, given how society looks on any kind of male gaze these days, especially in relation to girls on the brink of womanhood.

You've managed to re-bestow the genuine adoration of a girl who is blossoming into a woman, without any hint of anything exploitative or sordid in any way whatsoever.

And you have wrapped the whole thing in layer upon layer of translucence and silk - the words shimmer on the page. I may be rambling but I know what I mean! Beautifully written.

I stand up to applaud you - this is a fantastic poem, in so many ways x

I can't believe no one's commented on this yet. This is a fucking STORMING poem!! A grin slowly spread across my face and got wider by the line, and then I nearly choked on:

"and knowing no-one likes an angry poet,
I give him a big chocolatey grin
and explain about the tax.
Then, before he can whip it away,
I have another gulp of mocha
grab the rest of the Chocolate Crunch™
and stuff it in my gob.

He threatens to call the police.

There’s a long pause.
Partly because my mouth’s so full of chocolate"

I'm still chuckling to myself :D As you probably know, this is so far up my street I live in it! I love how you totally take over it - this is MY poem! :D

Fucking brilliant Steve - I'd love to hear this performed

Please leave it up Julian! I guess it's illustrative of several things; that WOL has a sense of humour - and of (sometimes) its own ridiculousness, that anyone can post anything - and deem it poetry, and that it's possible to make a poetic/pictorial representation of a squashed centipede! Personally I love it when thihngs like this happen, it shows we're human! (Well, most of us!)

A.E.

Wow, Harry!
Your best ever!
"dindled"? It's not in my dictionary. But I don't care. It's perfect. I shall use it as though it's my own.
A grand-daughter I assume?
...and the change from boisterousness to something more respectful is perfect too. I well recall the change I went through with my own daughters undergoing that difficult transition from Daft Dad to a more confused and uncertain role.
Again, perfect. Best I've read in a long day's march.
