this is an excellent example of micro-poetry. in one line, you pack as much punch and story as many longer poems.

i'd love to see this with a line break though

For I thought I was a flower,
Was it I who set your soul on fire

for me, its perfect poetry.

thanks both. this is an amalgamation of many nights of hopeless writing alongside a sad headline of yesterday (the kittens). im glad it comes together in some sort of desperate hope-paste.

graphic and uncompromising Phil - really enjoyed (? not sure that's the right word) this - the repetition and banality of the actions and speech hides a bitter and uncompromising truth - well written

Fantastic Phil. You must have been there to write this - it feels that way at least. Even with the romance stripped away you've managed to humanize it. Great.

very clever Stu. In the sort of wild abandonment of form it strikes a note of chaos and gets a strong message across. It speaks strongly of discontentment and riling that is typical of some upbringings.
The sort of thing I probably wouldn't dare attempt with too much control in my writing.

Thanks Martin. I'm a bit of a railway buff, so yes I know of the heritage lines; much used by film companies ! I'm one of those smug folk that points out inconsistencies in background detail ! In the sixties so much infrastructure was up for grabs just left lying around.

My goodness, Alexandra..there's a terrible sadness in this. A sense of aloneness encountered all too much in a world so supposedly interconnected as ours.

And, you can't neglect the feminist aspect of how we are trained to "wear our faces"..much to think of in this.

Hey, Matt,

Great subject, I must say, though I'm out of proximity as far as real politik goes.

But, the same quandary arises in American education..standards and curriculae created for the masses by a centralized entity.

So much talent goes to waste..that of students and teachers.

Thanks for posting,

Yeah, so many societal problems created by so few people who are totally disconnected from the real world. Same for the NHS. Same for social services. Same for small businesses. Stupid.

Great poem, Matt, I think this really works. The recurring question is so true, and the latter half of it (selling lies to themselves) could apply on other sections of society where the government are concerned.

Some great description here Ray. Puts me in mind of several places I know which are sadly no longer in use and have been left to decay. That said there are a few lines being opened up again and therefore stations that are being renewed and reused such as the bluebell line in east Sussex which at one end now connects up to a mainline station to London.
Nice one

I was a bit previous Greg about the email! A confusing place is t'internet sometimes. I tried to get into reporting when I left school but failed brilliantly - in those days it was a notebook and pencil behind the ear.(music and photography beckoned).
Yes, I would love to come along to the Woking and have a day out. I am promised to a party and tinkling the ivories the day before, but Phyllosan at the ready in case of premature expiration.

All the best Ray

This is tremendous but painful to read, Matt. Spells it out, the damage that has been done. First Gove did it to our teachers and our kids, now he's done it to our whole country. My wife was a primary headteacher - a bloody good one - but retired early at the end of last year. My son, also a primary teacher, contemplated quitting this year, he was so upset about what has been going on. But he's changed jobs and is giving it one more go.

Nice work, Tom. I particularly loved the lines

'all too aware of what exists back down my tracks
haunted by our ghosts parading on this platform…'

which shift the reader's perception to something wider than the couple.
