I like the simplicity of this work, and its innate idea that death raises/releases the individual to some other plane of existence. The theme is an interesting confluence of religion and science. And well worth the POTW honour.

Merry Christmas.

Thanks for your suggestion Ray, I can see how dropping “falling” would make the beginning more dramatic, but I’m not sure if I prefer the softer approach, so you’ve got me pondering and if this poem should ever get printed or something, I would really consider your suggestion. Thanks for commenting.

Have a nice Christmas, all the best Des.

Some clever ideas and nicely expressed Des. May I suggest to drop "falling like" giving "The words fell like spores." Stronger image I reckon. Just a thought !

Many thanks, each.
I am delighted you enjoyed it, Cynthia, even though it is quite horrible. That is the perfect recipe I was trying to capture in it.
It seems we are a bit more squeamish than other European countries, MC, with their tradition of Krampus. They celebrate him in festivals as this one in Germany (I think) shows.

Thank you Cynthia.
Yes, the sumptuous yellows of the Oz "Christmas Tree", the world's largest mistletoe, the impossibly purple Jacarandas, now fading;the ridiculously riotous Bougainvilleas.

Season's Greetings from our hot and colourful city. Only ever been to Bermuda in early Spring, but I can imagine Hamilton in full bloom.
Best wishes for 2018!

I can just see Alfred Hitchcock nodding his approval. Love
the stealthy step-style music that adds much to the menace.
Anyway, don't kids love to be frightened? Check any Panto

Absolutely fabulous. You never lost my full attention for one syllable.

Finally, you have to stop 'fixing'. I'm oh-so in the same boat. I have 'fixed things' years later, and for the better, I think. But a little distance works wonders for finesse.

Hi Stu, to me this poem is a kind of comment on the human condition. We live in a world so volatile and crazy that we're almost too scared to breathe. And there is a silent consensus agreement to pretend that everything's okay really (just watch TV commercials). Maybe this isn't what you were trying to say but that's how I understood it. I think you could probably lose "because he is clumsy" as it's not necessary. But a very good poem which has impact.

I'd be interested to see how you would transform this experience as poetry. Sometimes it helps me to frame my experience as a character in a novel, and then change something. I agree with Cynthia on the last line.

Regarding where you are in this moment, my impression has been that the detours we take from what is expected both bring us something and cost us something. I hope what is brought to you is heartfelt, and what is lost clears a path.

Thank you for sharing

The line "Often mocked by crab and eel" has a great deal of power in it - that line alone could merit an entire poem built around it. I enjoyed the parallel construction of "hooked and caught" with it later. There were some pleasant surprises (mobile phone). Thanks for this!
