approach with caution
veered off, routine stop, in the shoulder…
looking over your paper work,
keep your hands on the steering wheel,
“I’m not going to ask again”
repeated offenses
respect my authority
police officers
a ford mustang and dodge charger
government funded electric vehicles
take a look inside the hood, it
purrs like a street cat with a scratchy throat
cut the lights on and off
I’m just try...

New York in the '80s: The Cry of the Abyss
Facing the abyss, I see the crime
The city bared to its dark mime
Crime’s the mirror of misery shown
A lament in minds, forlorn and alone
Streets stage a silent, somber play
Where spilled blood speaks of more than decay
It’s the soul torn by indifference’s might
And the law, once justice, fades from sight
The poor, martyrs to their cruel fate
Trade their dignity for crumbs on a plate

Hokey Okay
Hokey Okay - Experiences with the mental health teams
The police bring you in, next thing you’re out,
In out in out, fucks your head about,
They do the okay okay and turn you around,
Claiming that your mindsets sound!
Woahhh you’re okay okay,
Noooo, ill chokey chokey,
Woahhh, you’re okay okay
Head hurts, alarms sound ah ah ah
Then you’re back in again, out ...

Thrush
Folk have too much time on their hands
This mad lockdown's stoking mischief
Families living on top of each other
From bad neighbours there's no relief
They put up a new bird table next door
State of the art, four feeders on a pole
Luring all the birds from my garden
It was my finches and robins they stole
I was unable to sleep at the shock
Worried almost out of...

Holy Orders
In churches Gothic or
Norman the pious had them blessed by
Light from stained-glass as the perfume of
Incense attended their angular
Descent, while brave Lancelot's were
Housed in chain-mail and in
Modern times Marilyn took two to her
Grave, as, just the other day, did
George Floyd, his neck the latest
Pew for genuflection by a serving
Police officer who though no dou...

Lilacs
Between the last customer
and morning light
in the parking lot of the Korean Gentleman's Club,
he picks lilacs for me.
Standing high against a warehouse wall,
these always bloom early, and
he goes annually, covertly, in the still dark,
unsure of welcome by the
Korean Gentlemen.
He fills the car.
I imagine that damp, spring-scented ride home,
his fantasy of be...

Still life
Noel and Liam have still not made up
And it looks like the millers will
never win the cup
Theresa is still in number ten
And not much has changed since
Maggies den
We are still plagued with mass unemployment
Far too many are becoming insolvent
Everywhere people sleeping on the street
Too many families with nothing to eat
Still we can't bridge the north south divide
People still wait f...

TRUNCHEON FOR LUNCHEON
I heard 'King Arthur' on the 'mike'
In a place that they called Orgreave
Fronting Miners out on strike
Urging them all to 'Believe'
He told them it was "Coal not Dole"
Said Thatcher was a clown
And every Miner has a role
To take the Tories down
From Notts. and Derby and the Met
Cleveland, Avon and Somerset
After their luncheons
Drew their truncheons
On...

Insomnia (unamused by a whitling muse)
a night too quiet
yet, even in it’s silence,
not quite enough for me
now in my head those words were read
by Richard Burton
but then she came calling in the hours
when there aren’t yet enough digits on the clock
and I ignored the advice of William S Burroughs, or some other I forget,
and told her to fuck off, leave me to the monotone
test card transmission, t...
