My knowledge of mythology is sadly lacking, (I say sadly because as a child I was fascinated by the few stories I found but never did devote time or attention to explore it as much as I should have) but I find your poetry an enticing gateway and it keeps tempting me to look up all the references you make.

Oh no ?, I'm clearly having an obtuse day where I am causing all kinds of confusion...

I think the original quote from the novel was actually: (Hard times create strong men, Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men, Weak men create hard times,)

But it became a meme (so the internet shows and tells) and so there are a few variants, which you'd probably stumbled onto and I'm happy you posted it because it was very interesting and I'd not seen it before.

The version that I wrote might or might not also exist as a variant out there because someone else might or might not have also made the same alteration... but when I rephrased it into the variant using the word people it was 'my variant' not the original quotation, and I did so because I evaluated the words in my own mind as a philosophical construct and evolved it into something I found to be of variant interest.

Anyway, I really hope I cleared up all possible confusions... lets not forget nobody at WOL wrote the original, so I thought it must surely be fair play and intended for people to contribute opinions or chit chat on the theme?

Absolutely agree with Stephen's comment too, some of the strong people created in hard times would actually make the times even harder, so I suppose the postulation assumes that eventually 'good' will win over 'evil' and the result of the profusion of strength will eventually lead to 'better' times.

Somewhat ironically, Torquay have been drawn away to Woking in the Trophy quarter-finals. May the best team win! We're also at home to them in the National League this Saturday as well.

If Torquay (The Gulls) maintain their present form they should gain
promotion back to the Football League proper where they belong.
My brother-in-law lives within a shout of Plainmoor, the team's home
ground, and even at his advanced age would probably jump from
his armchair and indulge in a bit of arm-waving if that happened.
I'm sure Mr Martin will be considering that promotion for a celebratory poem.

Fair point, but it depends what we mean by strong and weak. Many apparently "strong" people turn out to be vain and full of hot air when tested. The assessment always has to be ex-post.

By way of explanation: the lines shown were quoted "as seen".
I've no way of knowing their original source so I cannot discuss
that in any way, but the general meaning embodied in the word
"people" seems equally relevant, though, somehow, not quite so "pointed".

Ah Brian you misunderstood my comment and that means I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't suggesting that the original quotation should change, just adding a variant version which says something else.

If I had instead of 'but may I...' said 'but may I add a variant' this would have been clearer, and I didn't do that but I also didn't write 'but may I suggest a change'

Wow, very astute, but may I....

Hard times create strong people,
Strong people create easy times.
Easy times create weak people,
Weak people create hard times,

Thanks, Graham. It has to be said that probably due to my age I do well up in odd places - so to speak - more often these days. Last time it happened was at the barber's - my first haircut in months - last summer. At the same time I seem to have developed a condition during lockdown called Dry Eyes. All very weird.

This is a nicely angled write Greg. There's a slightly dystopian edge in there somewhere, with hope blended in too. I'm left feeling sad that many are thinking 'that's it' after getting the jab, not realising that nothing changes, the problem hasn't gone away. I also feel that we MUST all invest more of our resources to increase funding of the NHS. We need a Greta!

Good work.

Brian,

Your strong emotional attachment to Kenya is something often felt by those of us who have lived and worked in other parts of the world. Such an experience is an education in itself. I lived in the deserts of Oman for ten years and even longer in Spain with a few years in the Caribbean. It is hard to settle back here as a part of us yearns to be back in to those places much loved and cherished. I too learned Arabic and Spanish and entered fully into the life of the world about me at the time.

Your poem touches the nerve ends of my soul as I too recall such incredible vistas and some of the best people I have ever had the joy of knowing.

Thank you for this
Keith

This one is like a time machine for me. I cannot help but get choked up with longing for those wonderful times we enjoyed there. How rich we were, and are, because of the experience of Kenya, East Africa. We spent fourteen years there -- not back and forth -- no. We lived there, learned the language, culture, food, and received and gave love from the marvelous Luyia people of western Kenya. I hope to visit there again one day before I meet our Maker.

This poem could easily be the power house of my soul, a place where one treats oneself to the exclusion of all else. Moments of solitude and self indulgence. Ten minutes! Aisha surely you can extend this.

This poem has a sacred quality to it especially when I read the words of the third stanza as it brings to life the house focusing as if on the epicentre of a real home. The smells and the noises, those aspects which bring a place to life and identify those who live there. My grandmother´s home evokes the same memories for me. A poem with nostalgia and real meaning.
