Sorry for my delay on commenting, again I am left speechless as a result of the responses on my poem. I am glad that my patriotic poem has inspired you to comment so keenly, and intelligently. Now if only we could WRITE OUT LOUD, these words for the world to see. Your comments deserve more of a response than I can provide. Sorry, please keep up with your comments, You will be heard, I am spreading the word about Write out Loud to all that I meet, and greet. Your words gentlemen, have been seen by many eyes outside of our Poetry contributors, One comment that I heard in response to what they had read was, "I have to show this to someone", And they did, and they did, and they did, ect, you are being read, Keep up the comments, Thanks to all of you, you make me feel so good about myself, Thank-you Write out Loud, for the opportunity to express myself. A hospital gown
it does appear
can expose a lot
and look quite queer
some will laugh
some brought to tears
gown turned around
shows front not rear!

MC., raises some interesting points but having spent four years in California at University I doubt if he is fully aware of what takes place in American Society. The man who remained in his car and would not get out was afraid of the same fate. More black men are killed by white police officers than white men despite black people being in a minority. Had George Floyd been white would he have been treated in the same way. I think not. The cold light of detached forensic attention will not alter the burning fact that the incident took place in a society riddled with racial prejudice. During my time there I hardly experienced a day without witnessing or hearing of incidents which were clearly racially motivated where black people were always demeaned and often wrongly accused.

Thank you for your comment Mariyam. I do appreciate nature and am often poetically or philosophically inspired by it although I am not as keen on insects and various other beasties so that I tend to prefer being on the edges of nature rather than at the centre of it.

A provocative pastiche on the English nursery rhyme "Who Killed
Cock Robin". The content omits the following relevant aspects::
The full medical assessment of Floyd's death under restraint. Coroner's report anyone?
The details of his behaviour immediately prior to ending up on the ground. The approach by the officers (who have already been "condemned" before trial) to this individual in his car was also
filmed and they maintained a polite consistent demand for
his cooperation - not given - ultimately leading to this tragedy.
I'm all in favour of the guilty being found to be so after ALL the
evidence is made available. Justice delayed is justice denied -
for all concerned. Floyd is arguably an agenda driven "media martyr" and that is not in the service of of rigorous investigative
examination of how and why this tragedy unfolded and ended.
Hopefully when the case is placed before the courts, the cold
light of detached forensic attention will be brought to bear on what went on that day, and verdicts given. Case closed.

Trevor,
You have excelled yourself with this poem. It is so well put together and hits the nail on the head. It is an indictment to a racist society who turn away from what they know goes on but remain silent. Covert racism is alive and well when these ugly incidents take place. What one police officer does has the support of many others who remain tight lipped. America is a violent nation in many respects. This has been proved so during the last four years when a racist was in charge. Who killed George Floyd. American Society killed him.

Trevor thank you for this

J.D - can I suggest the problem with living in a 'parallel universe' is that eventually, reality bites!

Trumps BIG LIE is based on the premise that more Whites voted for him than Afro Americans did, so legitimising his [and others]
claims of victory!

Philipos - no doubt those troops passing through were segregated, [my father fought in the war too].

Graham - I'm not sure what this reminds you of, other than a time of a 'sense of entitlement'?

John - healing and compassion can start with all of us and begin today.

Ray - I think it a sad day for 'the Emperors new clothes'. Someone should tell him he is naked!

New Shoes - personally I think Neil Youngs's 'Ohio' more relevant.

Felt compelled to re-post WHO KILLED GEORGE FLOYD, if only for the final stanza. Trevor

Thank you Stephen for taking time to comment on this poem/song.
Thanks also to those who have clicked 'Like' for the poem/song

Little story behind this one. There was a year when my children's school were teaching an assembly song which had similar themes but included unpleasant imagery and details which wasn't very age appropriate and my daughter told me she had been upset by the song and that other children were too. So, when I wrote to the head about it I pointed out that the themes could be achieved without unnecessary upsetting details, and wrote and sent this, not for use, but as an example to prove the point. ?

But the head wasn't a very good listener and preferred to say my daughter was lying about feeling upset or that anyone else had been, rather than admit that the song they'd chosen might be ill advised.

Still, inspiration wherever we find it. I don't like the story but I like the song.

I think it adds a duality of reading and meaning if you write it as 'unprepared / to see' rather than 'unprepared to / see'

I think it is an intriguing poem and I can understand why you are having difficulty titling it , but I look forward to see what you eventually decide to call it. Perhaps, 'Breaking Free'

Sometimes we need things torn apart to see what is really important. furthermore trump did not rule the world. And despite what most may think, our market was set for a great crash, beyond what anyone has ever seem. We as humans study history and patterns, if we don't learn, we don't progress. The tech revolution has been upon us for years, waiting for the chance to change the world. It is a fact that humans do not take well to change, unless there is fear and suffering involved. And when we tare apart everything that we think we know, it can be rebuilt to begin a new age. now what I believe is the scariest part of this and what may have had a part in the riots, is this aspect of what "under God" really means. If we can't truly and spiritually understand this especially where it lays in our Free Will, Then progression, no matter its Face, Will cease. what I have come to see though, is that industry has great power over our government, so what we should really be paying attention to is their actions. Trump is a tool, we have to see where we are truly coming from before we know where we are going. Neil Young said it " The older generation has something to say, but they better say it fast or get out of the way"

Politics is not a game for the faint-hearted and in the USA it has always been a source of heated discourse, division and diverse
views that has seen numerous occasions in evidence. How readily
we forget its early history, not least when the Lincoln years saw
rioting and bloodshed on a large scale, with that much vaunted
president suspending habeas corpus without reported reference to
congress. And politicians and their opponents fought duels. No saints then either. And presidents were being shot at or shot
down - even up to recent times. The extremists are always around
to attach themselves to "causes". Ask the IRA about the criminal
elements that attached themselves to its cause to further their own
agendas. The America of today is still firmly rooted in vigorous
altercation and the global media is hardly free from culpability in its
approach to what - and how - information is provided for public
consumption. But it's a country that has its qualities and its faults
played out on a very public stage and that will remain a welcome
reality in a global world in which sinister forces manipulate and
manufacture according to their aims and intentions. Wider awareness is the great ongoing factor towards assessing what is
going on - where, when and why.

Love the title. Good one!
Much to consider here. Beware the benign smile that lulls the
mind into acquiescence. The Capitol Hill invasion had its egregious
adherents - those I and my old colleagues in law enforcement, used
to call "the usual suspects" or "renta-mob" - with the experience of
watching (and suffering from) their antics and listening to their
various rants. It is a fact of life that all notable public events have
these people attach themselves and often "high-jack" the occasion
by their aggressive behaviour so that the event itself is tainted in people's minds. Voices raised in vigorous dissent are the reminders of what freedom is about and why it must never be suppressed or
reduced by false virtue and its sinister sisters; subterfuge and the removal of public platforms for giving voice to what might be
"unpopular" views.

This is a fine and timely poem, but, as others say, it is such a shame that things have come to this. As in many Western democracies, there is an anger from certain parts of society which will be difficult to put back in the bottle. We need leadership based on truth, not lies. Let's hope there will be some from 20 January.
