Brian,
A powerful poem of deep personal tragedy. I too suffered a miserable childhood for reasons other than the ones you describe. I often wonder if parents ever realise the damage that can be inflicted on a child during their formative years, damage which can last for a lifetime. I ran away in the end leaving a younger brother and sister to continue and live in a hell hole. My brother who is younger than I by five years is still traumatised by those awful years.
Thank you for this poem. From reading many of your poems you have developed into a writer who is highly observant and sensitive, one who can well describe life as it is and affects us all. Well done Brian
Keith

What an horrendous childhood experience for you to undergo, but great you have at least one family member that you are very close to.
Words sometimes are not enough to assuage these problems but you at least got it out there in the open.
You are not alone in the battle of childhood grief as I am sure many on WOL will agree.
Blessings.

Aviva, your words are beautiful!!
I especially loved the emphasis on considering not what we will take with us, but on what we will leave behind ?
Thank you for sharing!

interesting thought
but it does not seem to effect dogs
who sniff anything that moves
or not.

I'm a believer, but my beliefs are uniquely crafted. Just because my beliefs centre in my own understanding of life and the world as I know it doesn't mean that I don't have beliefs.

This is an unparalleled masterpiece
But don't worry, I am sure it is not your only one in this lifetime
And I'm sure there'll be some you don't even realise yet.

Thank you for your comment Stephen, this is definitely a good time for curiosity and learning new things, and I am one of those that does find it invigorating and strengthening to be involved in the process of learning something.
Thanks also Kevin for commenting, sometimes educated guesses can get it spectacularly wrong probably because it can lead to a sense of confidence and we can rush into huge mistakes that way - and science is guessing elevated to an art form.
Thanks also Your Royal Poetess for your comment. I also love this poem for those reasons but also because as well as being quite introspective there is a pervasive message from its title and through the use of 'we' throughout the poem that we have that much in common and are in it together.

Actually I myself am not certain whether the soul is everlasting or not and waver more on the probability that it isn't (as tomorrow's poem 'I'm A Believer' is going to show), nor indeed am I certain of many aspects that regularly define it, but the word even with all its uncertainties encapsulates something that I believe in.

Thank you for commenting Your Royal Poetess, I think fear is the main and most common reason why people don't reach their goals.
The title 'The Growth of Fear' covers many aspects of the poem but actually ironically enough I didn't write the poem to grow fear, quite the opposite, I had many overgrown fears that I was trying to shrink.

I believe fear stops you from overcoming limits, man should fear (but God - in May opinion). You cannot reach your goals being overshadowed with fear!

seems to be the dilemma of life. Everyone is making best guesses. at least we have science, which is an educated guess!

Rose, Stephen A., Aviva and Holden,
Thank you for your comments and likes. They are much appreciated. Aviva your comment gave rise to some thought. Perhaps people want more as a form of anxiety, to acquire more is, in some strange way, a means of establishing more of oneself. I would agree, from personal experience, that when one has enough there is a good outcome in the form of being less selfish and more giving.
Thank you again,
Keith

It really did happen, Stephen. I was trying to create differentiation between us. I did this quite successfully. But it seems the headhunter preferred the pompous prick-type consultant to Yours Truly.

Thanks for this, Stephen. Good fun. Interesting memories of the lad. There was a boy of similar habits at our school (just one?) who was transformed from a very ordinary tennis player into a potential grand-slam champion if he had recently indulged. Something to do with relaxation, I suppose......
