During my time as a custody officer with the Met. back in the day,
a visiting police doctor, with whom I enjoyed a chat on his visits,
once produced an eye-popping chart of various pills that were
promoted for medicos' use. Big Pharma were busy even then.
I wonder just how many products were issued on a "test them"
basis for the medical profession. Managing pain is always worth
encouraging but hands-on treatment seems preferable to pill-popping. The body may not always be receptive to these
substances and who-knows-what effect they have over a long
term..This concern updates to the ongoing Covid jabs as well!

The worst part is that there seem to be no one in the present
Parliament who shows any sign of being any better. I've never
minded the well-to-do having their money; it's when they
are frivolous with other people's cash that I take offence. The
recent lot in government have been guilty when vanity (save a
few minutes travelling time) projects like the London end of HSR2 have absorbed billions and desecrated the countryside
to add insult to injury. Why weren't the northern links given
priority for a start?

It is a very aspiring piece of work. I usually tend to write a lot of poems about the ocean and it’s funny how I never had any thoughts about this one. This shows the real beauty of a poem; it really brings different ideas and feelings within itself and touches so many souls in very distinct ways. It really does make sense to me actually as I love to spend a lot of time by the sea, and I've always found it peaceful to be there. I still can imagine that same peaceful state I’m in when I am there even though I don’t go there so often. I always feel the silence that you've described in your poem and now I realize that it was just within me and never really “the silence of the sea”! I’d love to reflect more on this as it inspires me to write a lot more about it. There is always a lot to write about the ocean as there are lots of mysteries that accompany it and that never cease to surprise us. Looking forward to reading more about your poems. So, thank you a lot for sharing this thought with all of us.💕

I used to love the Be Good Tanyas, John. It occurred to me just the other day that we are possibly the first generation to be so aware of dementia, that we are constantly on our guard for it, both in ourselves and in our loved ones. There's a thought.

This poem made me laugh, John! My son and grandsons adore football;* I have no passion for it but enjoy seeing their enthusiasm. Falling out of bed to make a dream kick, water, books and electronics flying, bewildered wife--a great descriptive read.

Editing my comment...in my mind's eye I saw American football on my first read of the poem; later realized English football is what Americans call soccer (I think?!) Lol. Both forms of football inspire huge passion that's for sure!

Mark, if your younger family life was like mine, there was a lack of awareness of all but the close family circle, and often nothing happened on birthdays, and my Mum went along with the prevailing trend!

Probably the best laughter-filled poetry night I was ever fortunate enough to be involved in, was at The White Horse in Hebden Bridge (many many moons ago), where Paul led the crazyness he so loved.
Paul never made you feel that you were the outsider in the poetry world, and the fact that he always gave encouragement made me feel that I wasn't a total fool in trying to write.
I'll be at Marsden on Sunday (for the first time in far too long) to help celebrate Paul, but it will also give me the opportunity to say 'thanks' to the Marsden Poetry Jam on a very personal level. Without Paul's voice, who knows where I'd be now.
