UOC - some interesting words from FDR. Not least when
considering the power of the press barons of his time and their
undoubted influence (nothing changes) over the public's view of
what goes on in the world. The famous names of wealth and influence abound, with the brilliant film "Citizen Kane"
threatened with lawsuits due to its alleged "take" on the all-powerful press baron William Randolph Hearst. Eisenhower
followed in his own time with a warning about the power
and influence of the Industrial-military complex, very
relevant in a modern mechanised/industrial world - ongoing
even now in its ability to obtain huge profits across a world
that is rarely free from conflict anywhere you look. We have
also recently witnessed an "update" via Big Pharma.

Don't fret JC - your kick-off is set to be delayed, with Arsenal now
locked and loaded and gunning for success this time aorund.
Perhaps Bayern Munich fans now have their own acquired ex-Spurs reason to feel a helping hand on their collective shoulders?
Irony takes interesting forms.

Whomsoever wins the fickle minds of British voters next time around should create a new position of Minister for Parenting!

With two of my own children now teachers and myself visiting the school gates four times a week delivering and picking up a grandchild, there is much to be learnt there.

We should do better for our children

Thanks for you question MC…as far as my personal “philosophy” is concerned you’ve hit the nail right on the head. I try not to use the terms“left/right wing”, on the premise that a fascist is a fascist, a bigot is a bigot…etc, regardless of their political affiliation, be they Labour or Tory…or indeed of any faith or none.

I Quote Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), commonly known by his initials FDR, speaking in 1938:

“Unhappy events abroad have re-taught us two simple truths about the liberty of a democratic people.
The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism—ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.
The second truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if its business system does not provide employment and produce and distribute goods in such a way as to sustain an acceptable standard of living.”

A superb poem, Holden. I've always felt that your poems are very classy, and this is another great poem to your growing collection. I loved the description of the jester here, and the last four lines -
"he delivers his
mirthful dramatics
laced with the
elixir of truth..."

I loved this & having run/hobbled the GNR seven times for the MSTrust since 2007 (three times with my kids) it made me feel a little better about missing out this year. The roar of the red arrows over the Tyne Bridge is only rivalled for sensory timing and perfection by the smell of fish & chips sitting down to eat in the Coast to Coast Chippy in Kirkby Stephen en route home. Deserving of a sonnet …

Much has been made - with some justification it seems - of HOW the money is spent in general, with particular concern
about the function of the management ranks rather than the
sharp-end hands-on services we rightly admire. Exceptional
events, such as the Covid epidemic, require exceptional actions
and the fall-out is still ongoing as far as what was done is now
perceived and subject to ongoing scrutiny. But I fear that "our"
money will always be regarded with a certain degree of laxity
across the political spectrum, not least because of common
cause and the "There but for the grace of God..." syndrome that
politicians must surely feel in such extraordinary circumstances.

Is that the fascist right or the fascist left? On contemporary
evidence I wouldn't class either of the current majority
parliamentary parties as worth electing to power.
As for school uniforms, I recall that the commendable idea was
to give all the kids a sense of common identity, aimed at
removing the perceived sartorial advantage of the kids from better-off parents that could engender envy and the emotional
discord that kids can suffer in such situations. I recall one kid
in my own long-ago childhood who complained to his parents
that he was called "Council house kid".. See what I mean about kids not missing much when it comes to being "one up"?

...a bottomless pit, MC?

It sure is...a pit dug by investors in greed.

A pit left in the place once occupied by the real "experts" (so much despised of the current regime and their so-called "opposition") Nurses, Matrons, doctors, consultants etc....now replaced by faceless "managers" who massage statistics on behalf of shareholders out sourcing to big pharma and private health companies.
