Thanks Jon and Desmond! This really came about; when my grandaughter was going to school she heard the 'plotters,' ran home and they saved it,but after two or three years it did die. They suspected some kind of chemical poisoning. When you think how long it takes them to grow from a tiny shoot, it's criminal. These trees have pine nuts too, as you probably know, which are used for that lovely 'pesto' a green, mainly basil, pasta sauce. Tx again.

This speaks to me of the truth of lies; in other words the masquerading behind smokescreens so well described in long form. We are weaned into blind acceptance until all becomes a kind of fantasy - but then isn't what so many wish for?
Could we face the deeper truths that threaten to ruin us with the light?
I love your sincerity and unwillingness to compromise for the sake of it Phil. Those that wish to learn truth must also suffer, I'm afraid.

A serious and illuminating story told with sensitivity and gravitas John. It feels a little like D H Lawrence in the telling. It makes some important judgments.

Lovely piece of work Chris. Well thought out and lyrical, and convincing within its remit. An air of romanticism stirs through the poem, and is has a true social history in it. The construction is well thought out too.

Enjoyed the read, Ray

Excellent poem... The trees take on an almost human form and by the end stanza I felt the sadness and the sorrow for these beautiful trees.

something is afoot here, some secret code?

yes, the enchiladas were delicious.

A very beautiful poem. Tears welled up as I read. I hope this wasn't written from life, but I fear that it was. If so, many sincere condolences. Don't be harsh on yourself. As the father of five grown-up children I know how difficult it is to draw the line between love and interference. Children, even adult ones, need to be free. Best wishes and keep writing, you have talent a-plenty. John

Although personally, I was more messy hair and wristwatches myself.

Thank you Mae for being kind and writing on my profile. Yes we both have suffered life threatening illnesses (myself twice, cancer and sepsis) but we are both still here. Hurrah for us!! I like your poems. You have your own style - pushing at the margins of meaning and encouraging your reader to think about the connotations of words and to read between the lines. I will come back to your poems.

Thank you all for commenting so kindly upon my poem 'Just deserts'and you twice Lisa.
!! And you Phil - I am so sincerely sorry for your loss. We lost our infant son to Meningitis in 1989 and a day doesnt go by without me thinking of him. He'd have been 30 this year. As Philip Larkin so memorably said in his poem, 'The Mower': "we should be kind / While there is still time."

All good wishes

To be homeless is like being without a life- nowhere to go where you have a right to be, and without a domicile you can't get any kind of job , so you are trapped. Agree with Hannah about Dickens's disapproval. I lived in London in the late 50s - early 60s and there weren't many homeless, on the streets anyway. Great writing.
