M.C.
I was around in 1962 albeit in my final years at school. Your poem echoes, not only what was taking place then but reminds us all that the Commonwealth of 54 nations is far bigger than Europe will ever be and that we have far more in common with them due to our long historical connection. We now need to re establish those links. The total Commonwealth population is in the region of 2.5 billion. We have transferred from being an imperial power to a commonwealth of self governing sovereign nations with mutual respect and understanding. A lot can be learned from this. Your poem is very relevant and well composed. Thank you for this.

Thank you Keith, Tom and Cynthia. I take no morsel of pleasure in thinking that, for a generation who sacrificed so much, modern England must appear an utterly hollow, selfish and alien place.

Cynthia,
This was the poetic response to having 2 deaths in the same week for 2 dear friends. I couldn't see the 'ships' in front of me, only the blue.

A fine piece, sensitive and strong. And well constructed, with both the will to speak and the words to do it.Whether personal or not is not material.

My word, Martin, what a treat of idea and portrayal, sensory and sensitive. I 'enjoyed' this, hugely.
You know, I also think you have a 'gem' in the first few lines that end with 'get off her feet'. It is so 'universal'.

Tom,
this is masterful in its speculative thought. So well put together and embracing a subject, which I suppose few, if any, would give any thought to. This poem has stirred my imagination. Writing finds itself in deep considered thought, from inspiration and the innate ability to use the language to its fullest potential. It is indeed a gift. Few realise or could achieve this. To be articulate is to find expression in all things, no matter how small or insignificant.
A very good poem, well crafted.
Thank you for this.

John,
a poem from memory lane without a doubt. Your mother and mine belonged to the same generation which for me, brings back songs such as "Run Rabbit Run", "Goodnight Children everywhere" and the sounds of Glenn Miller. They lived in a world so different and remote to what we now witness. I often wonder how my parents would have coped with Rap Music or the television programmes of today.
Thank you for this

Glad you liked "Retirement Village"
which was not really a poem
but more a rant with satire in mind.
Somehow I got away with it,
it was not deleted,
and I am still logged into this site,
a site for sore eyes!

I could never be rude to you. I like you too much. The two apostrophes fell out without thinking. Yes it does track better how you suggest. The journey I took was 2000km to my brother-in-law's funeral which inspired me to intertwine the two 'journeys'.
I am a lowly poet
Apostrophes no clue

Hi Jason, will be lazy and just say that I agree absolutely with Keith, who is much better at writing intelligent comments than I am!!! I have been saying to myself for years to make a mental list of what one has every day, instead of what one would like to have, but doesn't. I have a Victorian mourning locket with Memento Mori written on it, but I think of this in a positive way , as in your poem;' don't wallow in your shame or revel in your glory' - 'you must value every moment of the passing days'. Sometimes even troubled days make us stronger, or we learn lessons from them. Really liked this - the writing and the thoughts it expresses.Jennifer

Hi Keith! Think a lot of reflection must have gone into this! Each separate line is noteworthy in my humble opinion. Liked especially 'regret saddens the heart as a shower of rain, it falls and fails to quench the soul'. Better and better each time.

Hi Don!
Up to last year I had no probs about my (considerable) age, and never told lies about it, but now I have changed my mindset a little, as if people don't know you, but find out how ancient you are, they tend to write you off automatically. I overheard a friend saying to someone 'she may be ....., but she's very good company!!!

Hiya Don! sad when this happens. It's HOW it happens that I find really frightening. Just to henpeck you a bit - wouldn't it be better to put 'at his life journey's end'? The two apostrophes are , to me anyway, a bit clumsy, but it's your stuff! Don't be too rude answering, please, as I am very fond of your stuff, and always read it.

It's not something I suffer from regularly, but have done in the past (back then it was mostly debt related). My 'remembering poems' technique has been working really well though and has largely cured me. Well, that and weapons-grade levels of denial. ?
