BARCELONA RAIN

entry picture

BARCELONA RAIN

Rain-aromas carry

memories of better days:

thieves melt into darkness,

the destitute disappear

to practise illicit trades

down narrow Gothic alleys

but we linger endlessly

in desecrated neighbourhoods

with the shallow optimism

of shining architecture.

At dawn we scan horizons,

shake droplets from hair

surrender our past,

dodge disco tourists

spilling across the square

glitzed up with gin and roses

as night shades into day -

we just watch it all,

relieved to have each other.

Hi Keith.

Thanks. Sadly it's about the encroachment of commercialism which has divested the city of much of its previous charm and character. However, Barcelona still remains a constant source of inspiration.

Where about in Spain did you live? There are a few tales set in Barcelona in my collection The Private Unmentionable Gargoyle (available on Amazon under pen name Hubert Tsarko). There I go plugging my book again. Marketing advisor says I have to try harder.

John,

This poem resonated with me having lived in Spain for many years.
"down narrow gothic alleys, but we linger endlessly, in desecrated neighbourhoods", these words took me straight back to where I once lived. A beautifully descriptive poem and well crafted.

Thank you for this
Keith
