SG - i think optimism always achieves ascendancy at Christmas.,
embodied in the childish wonder that crosses the years. Who
can resist a smile and a response upon getting a "Merry Christmas" from another?

Autumn. Not sure about "desperate". I'm a sucker for anything remotely interesting that helps pass the time. Cheers ?

Haunting, exquisite in ways whereby each reading creates new
images in my mind.
Expressions such as, "these empty rooms, these lingering spaces, in empty railway stations", "across the road in another century" and " still the cries bounce from wall to wall, echoing in these empty rooms, that fatal fall" All come together to foster an atmosphere, a scene where memories are evoked in a sense of futility.
This poem caught my imagination in a highly receptive mood.
John, thank you for this.

Thanks for the comment Jennifer, always welcome. It is quite apparent that we have become highly susceptible to the American influence as it presides over our less cultured desires. We seem to have incorporated much of the more hip elements into our language and by virtue of social media are swept up on a wave of expectation to absorb it. It's hard to avoid, and as you say the commercial exploitation has become ruinous. Black Friday in particular . The problem is we are regarded in America as curios , and i'm sure Betjeman especially. We must treasure him on that basis alone in my opinion, even if he like so many, have become out of fashion.

Greta Thunberg- an environment activist she is, she says. But if her work is spreading awareness about the environment, why does she have to intervene in political matters concerning the safety and development of other nations. Accepting loads of money and speaking up for terrorists who pretend to be revolutionaries is not a great job.

'Love' undoubtedly is just another word, yet it is so much more. Something we need a lot in today's world. It stands apart from the other words because of the depth contained in its meaning and the emotion associated with it. But lives have become all about superficiality today. This poem is amazing!

I do find it amusing that prior to the Brexit vote every burp and fart was blamed by Leavers on the EU; on the other hand, after Brexit they seem particularly upset that the fallibilities of Brexit are pointed out to them.

Mildly amusing John, though is it to some degree plagiarism as it uses Lennon's tune and verse structure? Still, I don't expect Yoko to pursue it so I guess there's no harm done.
As for the sentiment, the anti-EU lot banged on about leaving for donkeys years so I guess we should let you and others have a few years sniping.

Tbh, I'm getting bored of Brexit. It got done, we got shafted, get over it. That doesn't mean I will be taking part in next year's Brexit festival, however it is packaged. But I remember quite liking the 1970s, first time around.

I am sure he won't, Julie. I love this. We once saw a pair of white geese broken up by an intruding (handsome) Chinese goose. So sad for the male who first swam behind, then left. I really hope he found another partner. This poem made me think of that incident.

JC - love the quote from that road sign. Humour is a great way
to burst the inflated balloon of assumed affront.
SA - every year sees the negative approach to the Season but
its essential message of "good will to all men" is surely as important as ever.
Appreciation is also extended to those "liking" this seasonal
contribution. ?

Wriley put JC as always. I don't recall anyone saying it would be easy and of course you've very conveniently failed to mention the impact of covid on some of the things you mention. I for one am happy to be in charge of our own vaccination programme and not leave it to outgoing 'mother' in Germany or the French premier who's ego far outweighs his abilities.
Great song paraphrased as always but I prefer Merry Christmas Everyone (even if it is a little shakey).
Have a good one old friend!

Strongly felt and fluently angry Keith. We all should be angry. Muslim majority States in the middle East have conducted a 120 year genocide against Christians and other religious minorities. We ignore these First Christians at our eternal peril. Over a million (1,000,000) Assyrian Christians have fled persecution, genocide and forced conversions. The UK , to our shame, has given sanctuary to fewer than 4000 Assyrian Christians.
