the GNR has always struck me as a bit of a dour event and some of your descriptions remind me of this.
I'm not sure just how broken Britain is when compared to some other countries and of course 2012 was a stellar year being Olympics et al.
Strangely enough I have been giving a lot of thought to 'charity fundraisers' recently and what a peculiar phenomenon it has become.
As always Greg, I seem to be able to hear your words! Have you got your eye out for a whippet yet?

Thank you very much for your comments, Steve, and for the Likes, Nigel, Holden, and John. Commiserations, Steve, for your bad luck in 2000. I'm not sure how many of this year's runners would appreciate me loading such symbolism on to the event. But that's what poets do sometimes, isn't it?

I missed it this year, Greg, but in 2000 I was due on the starting line for my one crack at the Great North Run, only to have to pull out at the last moment because of illness. I felt at the time that I didn't deserve it, just as no one deserved what happened on Sunday.
You capture the tinge of sadness in the whole event (Sir Mo etc) and the contrast with the heady days of 2012 is very effective.

Thank you, Greg. Yes, I think terrifying is the word for McMafia. When we see Putin lining up with the likes of North Korea and Iran, it's clear these people do have to be stopped.
As you say, John, freedoms have to be fought for, and this takes time and demands enormous sacrifice.
Thank you, Manish and Kevin, for your generous comments.
And thanks for the likes to Hélène, Holden, Stephen and Nigel.

Good job Doran! The poem has a nice rhythm. I particularly liked the lines:
"The trees are embers.
There are apples on the floor.
I get the feeling
death is at my door."
Excellent imagery in those lines. (Eg Things are dying and falling down, the poet has no energy to pick up the apples. Many can relate to that emotion I think). Keep on writing!

Yes, John, the poetry of failure ... a new genre, perhaps? Thanks for mentioning Marples, and I'm very glad that you enjoyed it. The three poems you mention ... quite a mixed bag, although two of them have an expat feel to them.

I'm a bit surprised they would even have a poetry competition at a country fair. Oh well, commiserations, but the experience has resulted in a new poem anyway.

These lines are very important to the whole piece. Very effective
Less Is less
Don’t confide in your confines
They plot out the lines
Of your prison
And it only ever becomes
Less, less and less
Until you disappear
Or embrace mess

I've read this poem three times at poetry nights in the last two weeks. At the first in North Shields, it went down like a lead balloon. But it was my first night there, and I was first on, and maybe they didn't know what to expect, and were not so in tune with the idea of village shows. At Rothbury and at Wooler this week, both much more rural, it was very well received. Mind you, in each case it was towards the end of the evening, when more alcohol had been consumed.
PS My wife's veg triumphed at the village show today. She certainly knows her onions.

Ha...they sound like Spanish holiday resorts!! 😍
The medicos do love to prescribe their choice of drugs for what
they diagnose! When I was a very busy West End Met.Police
custody officer, I took time to enjoy a chat with visiting police
surgeons when they were needed - and still recall the huge
chart pulled from one doc's bag that was unrolled to display an
eye-watering range of medications to choose from. Now what
was that very recent concern about "Big Pharma"???

You always find something new and fresh to write about on this subject, Steve. I've been catching up on a terrifying series about Russian gangsters called McMafia, which I think came out before the invasion of Ukraine. It's very good but deeply depressing. We must stop these kinds of people from taking over our world, however we can.
