You read a lot of poems on this site, the good the bad and the indifferent. And then something hits you. I am so pleased you made a comment on my poem, or I would have never looked at yours. (That's the one weakness, and positive point, there are too many poems here to read.)This is not only a lovely poem but clever. It tells of Grandpa in his garden and place of worship. Probably as a quaker how he lived his life. I shall read some more of your poems.

CBT, Hi,
ref Dinner Date, or should that be: 'Inner Date' one never knows! you alone have delved into the thoughts behind this one. I usually expose the insipid mush but this was a fling, and yes, you triumphed! Well played, for seeing the truth inside this shallow piece of 'deception' in that I kept it simple to please the audience. I shall now be your most gracious 'watcher' Please, please me more! ta muchly, Nick.

Laura, thanks for reading and commenting on Day 6. I posted something earlier from this same series of poems, I just wanted to see what the reaction is to some of the other ones. In case your curious I did a group of poems called 30 days to forget her. One poem a day for 30 days about how I was feeling about her at that time.

I honestly don't think it worked, nor do I think it was as therapeutic as it could have been. In fact I think it drew out the transition phase from being involved to being single a little longer than it should have been.

A loving epitaph.
I feel that the rhythm of the 3rd line in the 1st and 3rd verses rather make the reader stumble.
How about
'Though there's much that is sadder than that.'

and
'And we know that this may be scoffed at'

I'm with you on this Ray. In the hands of an expert (you) the rhyme and metre enhance the subject matter and you have certainly captured the sombre, hopeless helplessness of the newly bereaved. 'The sheets I will not change', Sure I can stop just when I want'
It certainly leaves me with a feeling of sadness. XX

Hi John
to start in reverse order There was not much point in shame - it didn't rhyme with pelican!
As for all those different crossings, I'd no idea there were so many. I'd just googled pedestrian crossing when this novella on crossings popped up and tempted me - I'm easily led!
By the way if this cycle thread is to be sustained are you doing a rewrite of the pushbike song? XX

ah the delight of cyclists on our country lanes, the hiss of a snake at my horse's heels as Martian headed beasts whizz pass with inches to spare, with no advance proclamation of their passing, or the mob of wheels hurtling head down round the corner (on the wrong side of the road) admiring nothing but the blackness of the tarmac, blind to the blossom on the hedgerows. I dread the day it is the silence of the electric car that we curse instead.

No, really. That shifts the buggers.
Of course the reality is that I'm a cyclist when I'm on my bike, a motorist when I'm in my car and a pedestrian when I've got a puncture.

Yvonne - "mentally flossing": to clear the mind of detritus detrimental to the job in hand...in this instance - cycling!
But I enjoyed your view on the subject and take some
pleasure in the knowledge that the humble bike and its
custodian got some right of reply in the face of outrage from apoplectic foot-sloggers (and boat moorers!) :-))

By the way - although my bike has a bell, I find it more effective to do an impression of
the Road Runner as I approach pedestrians from
behind.
You'd be amazed how effective a loud verbal "BEEP-BEEP" can be when a bell fails to
elicit any response.

I know that some folk have little spatial awareness of what's happening around them. I was out jogging once, trotting along the pavement and as I passed a pedestrian on the
side nearest the highway, he jumped violently, half-lashed out and shouted rudely at me. A
good example of someone totally unaware of his
surroundings, no doubt lost in his own little
world. Should I have shouted "Beware jogger!"
or perhaps (more fun!!) "Watch out, dozy-head!"
A numbskull (and there are plenty of them out there) needs a nanny...or perhaps a licence
to allow them to be out in public while unattended?

This is a curious one Ray. It seems like it should be sad because the subject matter is sad - I'm presuming that the spouse took his own life and that the neigbours now gossip, while she mourns the loss.

I love the opening lines but struggle with the rhyme later on. Strict rhyming pattern doesn't go hand in hand with sadness for me - I need a freer scheme. That's just my opinion though.

You paint a good snap shot here Gus and set a sorry mood. There are plenty of things that can take your smile away in life, beyond the weather, n'est-ce pas? It's the best imagery I've ever come across for portraying it though.

I liked the idea of the smile as a tangible thing that you could pick up and drop.

Hope the grown up you is smiling. x

What I mean by sentiment is the 'I am a woman' idea. I'm probably now digging a hole and sounding sexist. I read poems here and don't comment because I don't even think they are worthy of commenting on. But I could read that you are a poet. I wanted to say what I felt, sounding pompous now, to maybe provide positive criticism. If I make on criticism of this site, it's I worry about the emperor's new clothes. Sometimes, and not all, I've seen criticism made, people are just too nice about people's work. Best wishes Glyn
