Love this poem you read it so well at The Tudor ... loved the line chip of the old block and. not giving up ... the rawness and yet the simplicity of rocks ... rough ... smooth... she stuffs them in her pockets .... irresistible ... brilliant poem xx

Hi Shirley-Anne

I wrote this deliberate piece of nonsense in a cynical frame of mind for which I apologise, to see what sort of reaction it would attract.
And comment-wise it's done better than my usual stuff. Where have I gone wrong? LOveryL.

Absolutely hilarious. IMO, the observers and thinkers always make the best writers; they can scorn all styles and dictates to do their own original thing. Go for it, Edie, and never self-deprecate for effect. You are some kind of talented!

Love it! The poetic skill in developing the minutiae to prod and develop the big social picture is superb. What an eye for detail that drives a theme instead of curbing it, with sharp, raw insight.

I am so glad you've chosen to take part on WOL. And it is fantastic that you are not trying to be 'good' because that would mean that you might be artistically choked by other people's opinions before you ever pick up a pen (so to speak.)

Once again, a very poetic grasp of experience and its personal expression. If 'doubled with dreams' is an accident, it is sure a good one; the effect is excellent. But I do think you mean 'quiet' and not 'quite'.

Most people like a name, and a face too, to relate with. It does get a bit vexing, because some names are silly pseudo's, and that really annoys me personally.

I get the feeling that English is not your first language. Not sure why.

This deserves more appreciative comments. The theme is excellent, and well presented. I wonder if the long lines are a deterrent, looking perhaps 'too prosy'. There are many areas where a break/turn could be used to great effect. But that's just window-dressing; the poetry is really there, and line breaks are very subjective.

"The Great War", the latter read by Jim Carter

This is really good, using powerful, evocative imagery controlled with great finesse so that the tragedy is clearly twofold - for your uncle and yourself.

The ending is superb. May I ask whether you might have meant -

'Did you expect me to follow you
there
as well?'

'here' seems to indicate that 'death' is shared. I could be wrong. It's just a thought.

I don't know why others have not commented on such an excellent piece of work. Perhaps they don't like that you have not identified yourself in any way.

It always takes two or three readings to bring the ideas together, but once connected, the impact is intense. I 'hip-hop' my way through the lines for the best effect. A true philosopher you certainly are.

I love this - you weave imagination out of and into the picture. You, yourself, must greatly enjoy the painting first, before you sink your thoughts into the possible ethos of the painter.

This has great emotion and an inherent feel for the words to express it. It is a very large theme and kudos to you for taking it on, for sharing.

Line breaks are very personal, I know, but I do wonder if thoughts need to be quite so separated. It is written as one would read it aloud, with the emphases and pauses for best effect. Perhaps it is just me, that I find many poems on the page far more fragmented than necessary, like it's just the current 'in' thing.

Thanks for checking out my own works.

'the serendipity of Providence' - now there is a thought - happy happenstance juxtaposed against the presumed beneficence of God - pretty contradictory -

But the poem has that particular charm of thoughts whirling around before slumber. And you have made some considered connections of ideas. It is very interesting.

This has a good point to make, which isn't really clear until the very end. At least, I think it's clear. This is a 'mirror' poem, isn't it? Please set me right if I'm way off track - with apologies. As I read I was thinking 'reflective kid' and then 'reflective parent' until I finally settled on 'reflective self'.

I enjoyed your company on Tuesday evening.
