White lives, black lives, hispanic lives, indigenous native lives...all are in the mix in that huge country. As for statistics produced by any newspaper, corroboration is
relevant, especially when figures demonstrating levels
of crime originating from any one ethnic origin are not
mentioned. If the prison population of America has a
disproportionate number of inmates from the black
and hispanic populations then that leads to the question
"why so?". Statistics need balanced attention to
achieve a proper fully informed spectrum of public
awareness when lives are lost in encounters between
law officers and those they face in their duties.

Was interesting giving it a try and might do so again. Maybe the next one will be about "toil" to make up for the absence here?!

A heart-tugging evocation of times past from a particular
place and point of view. Some lovely touches that
convey the loss and the never quite satisfied acceptance
of "the new is better" assertion.
Back in the early 1960s I worked/walked the dockland
streets of Limehouse, Poplar and the Isle of Dogs when
many homes stood like those mentioned in "Dove Row",
soon to be swept away by the advent of Canary Wharf
with its "new" East End, and I recognise the content of
this rewarding blog.

Hi Rachel, Congratulations on winning POTW. BTW is the last line "you say you final goodbyes", or "you say your final goodbyes"?. My favourite line is "You feel her ghosting warm skin". Cheers!

thanks both. im glad the repetition and rhythm worked out as its not really my forte.
they dont make you sound like a jerk elP, infact hearing that the writing is real makes me happier than just hearing that someone enjoyed it. id take unsettled immersion over scratch the surface entertainment any day. theres far too much greyscale rubbish around that just wants to be liked. thats not what poetry is about (in my opinion), its about being challenged, creeped out and unsettled.

Ideas are strong and sure, believable. Perhaps fewer words would make an even greater impact. The final line is a bit puzzling with 'theirs', but maybe I just don't 'get it'.
You might check 'loose' or 'lose'. If it says 'loose', maybe that's exactly what you wanted. If not, take care with spelling; it's important for page presentation.

This is a re-post.
I later realised this poem had virtually evolved into 8-line stanzas without any conscious direction. So I made a minor alteration to 'finish' the page presentation, and I've re-posted it. And I hope, without offence to anyone.

This is a clever concept Alexandra. V3 and V7 easily the best for me.
Although it sounds like a rite of passage thing, it could equally apply to the loss of a friend or her friendship etc.

Hey Stu,
This one's a little too close to reality for me to "like", though I can certainly relate very well..I kept waiting for the alarm to go off.
It seems like I get my best sleep in that hour or so before that damn noise goes off that fits in such surreality with my dreams sometimes. I needed sleep so badly once that I dreamed that I was a basketball player and the buzzer was someone making a couple of points..I turned the alarm off and went back to sleep.
Weekends are great.

btw, the repetition of phrasing works very well

A very true poem for this land of the grey heads.
Mind, it`s not just the age - it`s the attitude...for instance...
last Saturday night at the Legion (average age 80) We were
scorching the floor polish (well...at least warming it up a bit)
...But you should have seen Cyril`s (92) and Betty`s (86) jive!!!!..?

Obviously pretty good!
I wasn't so taken with Arterial as Billy Collins, on the previous prize, but it is memorable. Not faultless, but personal, complete. I am reminded the whole big prize system seems oddly geared to the promotion of the chosen few - the happy few - so there are questions, but Abigail Parry can certainly write, good luck to her.

It's good to write such powerful feelings on, I think it's often cathartic and allows others to reflect on their own devastating experiences. A brave poem and benefits from the new life you have generated , continuing with hope despite the sad memory.

David,
I`d not come across this form before...I see that you have used line fives and the repetitions for the human localities of salt (the form seems to have some good possibilities...maybe as a less complex way (than the villanelle perhaps) of stressing the theme)
Mind (thinking of that famous Churchill speech) it could be a good idea to get toil in there as a fourth.
Good to see some (illustrated) formal stuff on here.

lovely ode to books. sad to say that with libraries closing or being run more often by volunteers (wonderful people but not librarians) i fear for books. however, independent bookshops are thriving so thats one good thing. particularly like the final part about pokemon go, which is a sad fad but nicely highlights the affect technology has on us. anyone who says that AI doesnt already rule the world is wrong i think.
