Hi Albert. Great to have your uplifting comment and to know you are swimming in that great ocean that has depth breadth and the sky to go with it. Thanks for liking my work - no amount of liking can remove self doubt I find but it certainly helps - we all share a seat in the great theatre of the unfathomable. I like your reaching out style- sincerely expressed. I'm an old beast, but still have the yearning. !!

Another nostalgia bomb Rick. I knew before I reached the end that it had to be the east end. Some of the seeds of this were voiced by Warren Mitchell with the benefit of Johnny Speight maybe, I must say with some justification although it is now off the radar of course.

Your folk represented here asked for little and got very little.

History is certainly there to teach us in so many ways.
The failure of human nature to learn from it is well
documented and will continue to be a cause for concern
in numerous areas of human conduct. Every country and
society has its social responsibilities and legal framework
to work within and the USA, with its huge population,
constantly shifting levels and high expectations,
has more problems than most. But to seize individual
instances as an ongoing wholesale dismissal of one
large section of the population is likely to exacerbate
division rather than contain it and construct a future for
all. As far as "Black Lives Matter" - what of the obvious
and numerous instances of black figures of authority and
influence who are the evidence of that reality?
It has been observed elsewhere that it should be "Lives Matter" - and why not? since that is an important
inclusion of the many origins it does not deign to
mention but who do not take to the streets in pursuit
of often violent redress for perceived grievances about
which the participants seem to act without possession
of the full facts. Human nature, being what it is, this
emotive public reaction may be understandable but it is not excusable in the interests of social cohesion or
clear eyed justice. Indeed, it can undermine both...
in no one's long term interests.
That's how I see it - wherever you happen to live.

Fair comment, Steve. There is always the risk with "causes" that they can be well-meant but affected by
other factors that are ignored to their peril.

An entertaining invitation to take part in "if" as a possibility.
But so far.....
Time travel's a reality,
But it's a one-way track.
Once railroaded along that way,
There's just no turning back.

Back to the drawing board for more precision and incision, take the plunge, etc...

There is a background of irony to this. My husband and I would have been similarly buried in screens if my battery had not run out, which made me pull out my notebook to use pen and paper. Hence the poem. How much more would I write if I had no device?
Some years back I wrote one about facebook. I wrote it on the Memo on my phone. Certainky they have many uses. Memo lends itself to haiku type length, but I find pencil and paper gets the creative juices going.

'the wreckless pursuits of empathy..in spite of myself, last minute and at great expense.'

You know, sometimes you just have to say "bless those empty souls" for never having to search long and hard for something that comes at more expense than for which money could ever pay..

Nicely put Freda but I wonder what those same travellers would have done before the advent of hand held devices. Buried their heads in newspapers maybe? Btw, I'm sitting in a small pizza restaurant in Florida on my own and reading your poem on my smart phone. They have their uses. And I enjoyed reading your words.

Rick,
I like the way this `places`the styles and progress of an era....Also the humility of it.

The whole thing is full of neighbourhood (your kids at school together) and the section about the bouquet is very poignant.

That the only time you got at all intimate with Brenda was in the terminal ward is a bit of a tragic master stroke of the effect of time moving on.

A sad and effective example of `poem as story`

Hey there, Ray,

I like the metaphor..it has me thinking. I can't help but keep coming back to the idea of the subconscious as being like an attic. Some things just get buried under too much stuff and require lots of effort to find.

It's kind of a funny notion to think about what other people's attics look like, too..I mean, maybe some of their stuff looks a lot like some of my stuff, eh?

Thanks a bunch for commenting.

Alexandra,

I especially like the line 'there were dandelions on her lips'; I interpreted it as meaning either your persona regards her as being a magical being as people often make wishes whilst blowing on dandelions; or that the woman is a free spirit who doesn't remain with one person for long. Love your use of nature metaphors!

Entertaining in a diabolical way Stu. Poetry is safe in dreams as they have a unique meaning - though what can it be? There's the rub.
