John,
Another gem. This morning I took a bus through our rural landscape and closely observed the arrival of May, those incipient signs of summer with leaves not yet fully grown. Then I came to read this poem which summed up so succinctly all I had felt on that morning journey. Rich in descriptive beauty. A great poem. An ode to May.
Thank you for this
Keith

Hello Wolfgar,
Thank you for reading and for your question. What I was trying to convey is the latter in your question, ie knowing the train will come, and with it eventually the inevitable bad news of loss or end, but not knowing when. The dread is in the expectation.
Thanks again,
Jeannot

I recall locating a very disturbing video online of a match between
Liverpool and Man. Utd following the tragedy suffered by the
latter in the Munich air-disaster. The chanting of the Liverpool
supporters made a vile mockery of that tragedy. I've never
had much time for that club or its supporters.

I can imagine Jennifer. Thanks for reminding me. Sorry if it gave you the eebie-jeebies Keith. Influenced by my re-reading of Edgar Allan Poe's poetry and stories and by remembering a very weird event/feeling engendered whilst walking down Baker Street into the Regent's Park many moons ago. All good wishes, as ever, John

Trevor, actually I/we didn't. It was wartime when this happened and Mum's life was hard. Even we young kids knew that. And one more fear on her mind might really have been one burden too much. We knew that too. Maybe not in those terms, but the same principle. I don't know how she would have coped. She totally needed to trust us. And we had to be trustworthy. It had nothing to do with trying to avoid 'punishment', absolutely nothing. But everything to do with her 'mental health'. We were afraid 'for her', not 'of her'.

I like the man; I like the poetry. Armitage comes every year to read at Grasmere. His unassuming demeanour and slightly deadpan delivery are not to some people's tastes, but personally I find it compelling when listening to his words in 'performance'. Agree with Graham's points about the development of the role and visibility ( I believe he will be a good PL ) but not sure how it will be achieved as far as a wider audience is concerned.

I don't think there can be many who would disagree with this appointment. Armitage is well known and respected but he will face the same challenges as all poets do and that is to make the medium more well known.
It is also good to see that the PL role is moving away from merely being a recorder of State and Royal shenanigans into a more widespread educational role.
He will need to become visible!

Good morning, David, thanks for looking in.
In the States, I traveled everywhere by car, except in those fairly rare instances when going by air seemed feasible and a worthwhile trade-off against long hours spent driving--it's hard to put a value on respite when it's needed.
Anyway, my lifestyle has dramatically changed, and I rather like doing transit hands-free ;

Your Non-Fat piece struck a chord with me as I have been trying to slim my work down recently too

The rivalry between Manchester United and and Liverpool FC cannot be understated. As a kid growing up in the 70's my team were in the wilderness whilst Liverpool seemed to win everything. As a young man in the 90's the trend was reversed as Ferguson achieved his goal of "Knocking Liverpool off their perch". Whilst it is considered treacherous to support another football team other than your own there are many United fans this will resonate with. Irrespective of who wins, what a dramatic end to the season with English clubs dominating in Europe and a down to the wire finish in the EPL. May the best teams win.

Jon,
what an interesting poem which incorporates and acknowledges the source and intention of evil. "Dancing until the morning light" so symbolic as evil is often at play during the hours of darkness. A very unusual poem and along with Jane it is a work of much thought for the reader.
Thank you for this

David. Visual artists, like musicians, have, I think, the rub on us weary wordsmiths, especially when it comes to conveying something of the mystery of life.
