With self-serving ambivalence
A game of blame, one upping
Teeth gleaming, posing for a press cutting.
Bravo Jake.
I've always been a Labour voter by instinct.
So when Blair first came on the scene with his teeth gleaming, I sussed him out right away.
Sad truth is, Starmer now at Davos, doesn't represent the "working classes", the nurses at foodbanks, or the cleaners in our railway stations...he's just the other cheek of the same arse which has been dumping on the UK for the past 12 years.
Try:
"Cruel Britannia, Britannia waives the rules...."
or
"Gruel Britannia, Britannia plays us fools..."

Let’s not be bound by origins,
For culture is universal.
Very true.
Your poem brings to mind the hypocrisy which saw the great Daniel Barenboim condemned as a "Self-Hating Jew" for conducting Wagner's work, and for his involvement with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, a project which grouped together Arab and Israeli musicians.

I wasn't aware such a book existed.
Remember the fuss we in the UK made over South African Apartheid?
That could well have been written there....
or here...Signs on UK boarding houses: "No Negros, no Irish, no Dogs.....etc".

It's strange how the sudden, even brief, presence of a bird (or any other creature) can have such an impact, Hélène. I love the way that your last line expands the poem.

The poem takes its time to set up the framework for a wonderfully detailed scrutiny of nature's creatures at work and is a delight Jonathan. Nice to see you on here. It reminds me of a long abandoned wasps nest in the loft a masterpiece never to be revisited.

Thank you John, for the words, music and song.
How many people who consider themselves "British" are aware of the connection between the word "Britain" and the Brythonic languages?

Your political stance is overcoming the need for impartiality in
addressing what is wrong. If I'm prepared to spend my pension
on relieving s small part of the pressure (and money spent) on
the NHS which helped me into this world, your interpretation
of an "I'm all right Jack" attitude on my part is demeaning and
unworthy of a considered response.

A bit dark this one, John. I suppose there are a few less cunning variations, like the firing squad which misses or the guillotine blade which doesn' t quite reach the neck. Mind you, Harry seems a prime candidate for the MAGA 'Freedom Caucus' in the US.

The NHS was a grand concept that is in need of ugent review,
not least for the way it has been overtaken by time, demographics and events. This pensioner would be ready to
"go private" for emergency care if assured that the bottomless
pit the NATIONAL health service has become might undergo
proper revision of its finances e.g. who gets what? - and staff
e.g. how many "management" are actually needed to ensure
an efficient service nationwide for the country's people?
An afterthought to add to the mix -
There are too many beds filled with empty heads
Who have treated their bodies like shit,
Some sense and self-care to reduce the share
Of patient pressure would help more than a bit!.

Thanks to all for your likes and comments.
I've said many a time to my friends that I will "die fighting for the NHS".
To me, the very concept of the NHS represents all which is best about UK society; whilst those who are actively seeking to destroy it, represent all that is worst.
MC, 😊
I'm intrigued as to how I can be "gentler" to people who are actively causing me, my family and my friends "Actual Bodily Harm"?

Always good advice Hugh.👍
As for getting in debt, we have an economic system which is designed to keep some of us in debt.
The oft-trotted-out mantras "Getting people on the housing ladder", and "affordable housing"(affordable to whom?) are prime examples of that.
A massive chunk of our local countryside (farmland) has just been dug up for private houses which will be "affordable" only to the likes of company executives.
We need well-built and designed "Council Housing" at fair rents; but such a concept is anathema to both New Labour and Tories who pander to their voters' snobbery about "Council Estates".

Thanks Stephen. For this one, I originally had a verse for every disaster we're currently facing; climate, warming, sea level, disease, political etc and I walked through them all as my imagined family slowly died one by one along the way only find at the river's end was total nuclear armageddon.
However, I thought maybe this shorter version was probably enough 😂 Thanks for reading, commenting and liking.
