I say that the cost will not be met nor exceeded by the income. But the politicians and their cohorts will cook-da-books to make sure the figures are pleasing. You read the literature.

What income raised will be creamed off by big-business. You read the literature.

It is an unconscionable excess at any time- but in one of austerity ( caused by the very people who have orchestrated this recession ) it is an outrage. You read the literature.

Massive inconvenience to the public in a host of ways. You read the literature.

The undermining of civil liberties and the handing over to private business functions of the state. You read the literature.

Who gives a toss about drug addled cheats with their sham amateurism. You read the literature.

£30,000,000,000 could supply help and facilities to very many individuals and organisations who/that are financially and physically 'hanging by a thread'. You read the literature.

Imagine those real sporting facilities that could be built across the 'GB' for ALL citizens, especially the young. You read the literature.

While peoples houses, cars and property are being robbed and children abused, the police are 'bobbying' it at the Olympics. You read the literature.

...and as for tourists being welcomed to the event- hundreds of people on short term lets are being evicted to make way for the 'wealthy' You read the literature.

To all those adults who are thrilled by the Olympics.
To all those sportspeople who are on the point of hysteria over the Olympics.
To all those in charge of or likely to financially gain from the Olympics.
To all those in the media -epecially the BBC-who have become 'embedded' into the circus,
the following:

Well, yes, though there's perversity in insularity, too, and I'm not arguing for that. I'm quite prepared to be tolerant of other people - the father-in-law comes over every Sunday, reads the Daily Mail, pisses all over the bathroom floor and eats meat though we're vegetarians. So I can be tolerant of diversity. I just don't want to embrace it.

Amen to that! The demands of "Le Tour" have no equal in any other sporting event and that is emphasised by the fact that the current World Road Race Champion - Mark Cavendish - played a supporting role in Team Sky's attack in that race this year...probably putting the miles into his legs to prepare for a crack at the Olympic title to add to the WRRC title he holds.

Good question. I still remember writing this, so I can tell you with certainty that it was because of the sound of the words. "Trees" has that long "eee" sound like the wind, and ends with an unvoiced "sss". "Stones" has neither.

I've only just discovered your work as I only joined WOL in March this year but I am becoming seriously addicted!! I love comic rhyming verse having been weaned on Mariott Edgar/Stanley Holloway, cut my teeth on Flanders and Swan and confirmed into the cult of Les Barker and so to plunge into the warm pool of your verses, rhymes and wordplay is a sheer delight. Keep on blogging ! XX Yvonne

the event is bringing into the country - with
its value to tourism in the long term: to
London as an Olympic city and the UK in general.

There's perversity in diversity
With the English suspiciously quiet;
Politicians push it down our throats,
Hard sell - but will we buy it?
Intent on imposing with impunity...
But since when did "diverse" equal "unity"?

Thanks, Isobel. Such courses do indeed exist. And it seems that tolerance isn't enough, one must embrace diversity. That's the starting position nowadays.
You've possibly misunderstood the 4th verse. We were asked to come up with categories of people who feel themselves discriminated against. There was a long list, all of whom were then described as "oppressed". I objected on the grounds that oppressed was far too strong a word for most of the groups named. But apparently, if someone feels they are oppressed, then they are.I'm feeling oppressed by diversity just now.
That said, it's not a good poem, doesn't make its points clearly enough and the metre is poor in places.
