Many thanks for your comment/joke on "Brian Rix Remembered". It lightened my day.
I like the one that won a prize at the Edinburgh Festival:
about the son whose father encouraged him to be an
organ donor. Have you seen/heard it?

Ouch! Short and sweet? Perhaps more "sweet and sour"
and no less entertaining for that!
The reaction when pushed by the Sky reporter about the
incident at that NHS orientated press conference was
not well judged by the other JC who, in retrospect, could
have compared his alleged seat-less predicament with the
bed shortage and corridor queues they keep saying affect the Health Service.

Hey, Stu..I'm glad Lanc brought this up because I almost forgot about it..the visual had me daydreaming all day long..I even made a wrong exit from the interstate..

Anyhow, it seems it must be all about good and bad vibes. But, it had me thinking about sine waves and properties of sound and..and I just couldn't stop coming up with things to think about.

Very stimulating for the noggin..

I wanted to say thanks for your liking 1977 - I tried to convey the feeling of the time and how we inherit things and watch them disappear in a cloud of memory. I respect your work so much, and reading in particular your Poem of the Week gave me much pleasure with its rapier wit and probing sense of fun.

Heard a good one yesterday M.C.

Man with a glass eye leans out of hotel-room window - his eye falls out.

It is caught by beautiful blond four floors down.

She fetches it up to him in his bedroom.

He thanks her profusely...She looks at the bed.

Girl (coyly)...would you like to have sex.

Man (indignantly) ...Certainly not! you can`t expect me to
have sex with the first girl that catches my eye!

Great stuff Ray. Funny how all of those old names were performing like that in 77 whilst the Sex Pistols were stirring things up and playing God Save the Queen on a boat on the Thames during the Silver Jubilee year.

Did you go to NY with Debbie on the QE2? I can't help but think there is some scandal lurking between your lines! Did she marry Paul? Tell us more!!

Thank you for all your kind comments. I'm just catching up now having lost my WiFi in the canyonlands of Arizona.

David - staying safe and keeping clear of rednecks. Honestly, the company you keep!

Harry - unless there's an anniversary we don't get to hear much about this kind of history in the UK. So I'm glad my writing inspired you to listen to his speech again. I somehow felt my poem was a little out of step with all things currently newsworthy but maybe not. Same issues, different year.

Suki - I always read your poems with curiosity and think they make such a useful addition to the world of WoL. Thank you for writing 'fully deserved' in regards to this piece. Much appreciated.

Rachel - what I didn't mention in the poem was that the taxi driver had already helped an elderly white couple out of his cab and showed them where to go with much laughter and smiles. I was dawdling about taking pics and he offered to take one of me under the motel sign. At the time I just thought what a nice guy but later it seemed like he was meant to be there somehow. I dunno, his kindness and the experience of taking in that whole scene was very moving. Thanks again.

This poem makes me think how crazy it is that one bullet being fired can create such a historical landmark.
I really like how you included your modern/present day interaction with the taxi-driver at the end. Even though there is still so much hatred in the world, small but significant changes like the friendly interactions between different ethnicities show a positive change that people like MLK Jr fought for.
Congratulations on winning POTW!

I used to wish that I could go back in time and do something differently, but then I wouldn't be who I am today. An excellent poem that helps make peace with the past.

I'm intrigued that usually most of your audience is made up of non-poets, Maggie. To persuade so many to turn out for poetry, clearly it helps to offer them a spoonful or two of something else as well. You certainly seem to have hit on a good mix!

A very direct plea Martin for expression of the self inhibited as you imply by our forefathers. I feel it is an extra nail in the coffin where communities centred around the working man's club dispersed - places where drink eased the tongues and the jostling of acceptable emotions. The masculine role took a body blow not too long ago and now there is no hiding place. Probably a good thing in some ways.

I echo M.C. about the amazing speed of the change..when I got married this was the norm (even those gas mantles)
...and those cold bedrooms with their oil-clothed floors!...
Blimey cold?..lad you`ve never lived!

Then they were all knocked down and all of us were put into (nice) estates...Maggie Thatcher then `electorally` let us buy the new ones cheap and never ever put the money she got back into building enough new houses. So, the price of our new `brick assets` went up and up, and up.

So if any of you young `non home owners`are listening; That`s a large part of how we became the rich and prosperous baby Boomers and you are never likely to be able to afford to own your own house...(At least not till we croak and leave you our cash)

Alison,
This needs music!

I`d like to say a word for the cockroach:

Like spiders they feel very much neglected.
Rats and mouses are deplored,
Fleas and millipedes abhorred,
And rattlesnakes have never been respected.

Oh, territory folk should stick together.....
