The spectre of parenthood may be focussing in here Stu in the last lines perhaps. Reconciling creative aims with the commitments of family life does bring forth structures of the mind (or am I losing mine?) .

Hi, Martin,
I like this so much. You know, I'm a single mother of a son who's spent a significant part of her life working with men. I can say that it's been a lot about meeting standards--if not physically, then otherwise.
I can remember stating the inner-conflict to my own father when my son was younger.."I am trying to be soft as a mother, yet hard as a father."
I'm so glad that now I am able to see the soft side of my father as I was never privileged (privileged through understanding) to see him before. And, that I can pass that understanding on as a mother.
Lovely work here, Martin..

Colin,
Thanks for your comments.
It`s my own fault if it`s not too clear.
It`s to do with the question `was it rape or not rape` after a typically steamy `romantic` session which sometimes ends up in court...in particular the question of whether it`s better to take advantage of the ethically situational fact
of the passion, or stand to the moment of decision...It might need a new title or some legal reference.
I did it in minimally punctuated pods of seven lines and centred it to try and make it read better.
I plead not guilty to the two guys you mention ( but I had fun reading about them)
Thanks again.

Which reminds me. Driving along Route 66 I've had that song in my head for a few days now. But guess what? A Roadrunner bird dashed across in front of me today so thanks to him I have a new song to sing!

Thank you Dom for your comments. It's nice when a poem hits a chord and I'm honoured to have been chosen for POTW.
I like mixing up seemingly unrelated images to create a kind of walk through atmosphere if that makes sense. But it was the floods in Louisiana which forced me north to Memphis. I might never have gone there otherwise.
I hope your friend is safe. I heard 12 people lost their lives. I've seen more lightning in the last few weeks than I have in years back home. Today I was on top of an extinct volcano with thunder and lightning all around me. Exhilarating!
All the best
Colin

I was more fortunate as a West Country child, although
rural hardships had their own effects. But kids tend to
occupy a world of their own, taking and making the best
of things at a time when imagination is paramount. I
can certainly endorse the candle blown out before sleep
- as well as cold sheets and no heating in a cottage bedroom mercifully free of bedbugs.
I look forward to Part 2.

Ray, thanks as ever for your patience and your positive words. 'Victory Hill' was initially intended to be a more overtly political piece. I was going to touch on social welfare, the NHS and the decline I foresee in both as we travel into an uncertain future. In the end I went for something a bit more over-arching. Those on the lower part of the 'hill' represent an ignorant youth and a new kind of overclass I see developing. Meanwhile, the older, wiser lot at the top are looking back and pondering over how it all went wrong...

That's very nice Colin, the run-away rhythm & rhyme, not overstated, captures the weight of the eighteen wheelers, the fatalism of "his days are numbered" a really good drop down through impressions and attachments.
Looking at your blog, I see I've got a buddy dealing with the same floods as you at the moment, and the bibles abound, I'll send him a link in case you're at crossroads.
Dom.

Hello there - and welcome back on WOL.
Your recollections are not only entertaining but important
in an age when so much can quickly be forgotten or
disregarded - lost to those younger interested souls
who would like to know about such things from those
who knew them firsthand. After marrying for a second
time following the premature death of my father from TB in the late 1940s, my mother developed what I now
call "gypsy feet". It seemed that after about a year
in any place she'd be looking for an excuse to move and
I reckon that happened around 20 times in as many years
...so I had quite a bit of experience of living in a variety
of homes - pre-central heating and boiler days! But the
art of lighting a coal fire became second nature, as did
rubbing the ice from the inside of a bathroom window!
Keep posting.
