I remember and liked those "reliable" roll-up windows too! Unfortunately we live in a new world...smart phones, smart tv's and dumb people. I try to keep technology at a distance because it achieves nothing more than high blood pressure when "things don't work."
Great piece dk?

This is a really wonderful piece. Leaving home to discover one's path is what life is all about. Some manage this with less mistakes along the way than others but what ultimately counts is the journey and not the final destination.
A thought provoking poem, loved it!

I will call you none of those things because I love it.
You weave words in glad tribute to the bard,
Whilst in his style each word is clear your own.

I wonder if those who step heavily are sending out a physical signal
of their sense of self-importance. I have spent much of my living in
varying floor levels, above and below other folk and have been only
too aware of the footfall of others - and even wrote about that in a
poem using the words "elephants on the stairs".
Well done for obtaining POTW.

A parable for the age perhaps. In politics "truth" has always been an
elusive ephemeral thing - changing from day to day, situation to
situation - to suit circumstances. But our modern world with its instant global media demands makes reality even harder to discern.
The term "fake news" is a recent phenomenon that appears to
represent both the worrying substitution of what is known to be
false or anticipated to be right in place of what is KNOWN to be
CORRECT. The newspapers had their front page - but TV/radio media outfits have the constant pressures to fill in their 24 hour
schedules...and that can lead to misrepresentation at best and
falsehood at worst. And we haven't even touched on media
partiality, right and left-wing.

Tolerance and its bedfellow - respect - are admirable guides to a
worthwhile life for each of us. If you can add "love" to the equation,
so much the better for all our sakes.

The sad fact is that the same applies to their inventors - human beings we may or may not know. I'm reminded of the advert
about an East European car that offered manual wind windows
(if you remember them you're as old as I am) as a "back-up" extra
in case the electrics failed. Personally, I'd prefer the hand-wind
any day. Reliable ease of use and exercise combined!!

Thanks for the comments and the likes. If only those with religious
tendencies understood their belief to be a purely personal thing -
not intended to be imposed on the lives of others, the world would
be a better place IMHO.

I found it necessary to read this poem a few times to absorb the atmosphere it generated. It is filled with a deep sense of melancholy which although sad has a peculiar beauty with it. You paint a picture which to my mind accentuated the entire purpose of your writing it. I hope this makes sense as I enjoyed it and found it to be very real.
Thank you for this

True enough Jennifer, I've taken some steps that were right in my life and some that didn't work out so well and I'm sure there are still some left, but the main thing is I've always tried to take the right steps and I've based that on experience. Funny that even though we all fly the nest most of us sort return there, usually by building our own.

"History is written by the victors", "ignorance is bliss", and all that--there's quite a lot of history they're loath to teach in the public school system.
