If anyone can donate to the family of my late friend, the link is below. She played for team Ealing in London Youth Games and for London in the regional basketball tournament. She also represented team GB in American football. An exceptional athlete, team mate and dear friend.

Thanks Stephen, I love this-so powerful and validating! I feel this all rings very true-especially while politicians keep changing their minds every day with the approach they are taking to managing covid -19. Why are politicians leading this and not health professionals? Some good humour in this poem. Well done!
Best wishes,
Rasa

Our cops have become targets
shot and killed every day
it's become routine-
the breakdown of our country
our civilization.

whereas cops HERE never walk
they cruise in comfort
in their expensive squad cars
ever on the lookout for criminals
and the next donut shop!

do not eat donuts
Here....It's part of their basic training!

Thank you to all who 'liked' and those who commented on this elegy. I wrote it with no particular motive in my mind. I was inspired to write it as a lament because in my lifetime I have seen a marked deterioration in our values and common behaviour. My father once said that all things are only by comparison and this elegy is drawn from my experience of having witnessed a decline in a period since the end of the second world war. I think many others of my age will have seen this also.
Thank you again for reading this elegy and your kind and constructive comments.

This is a fine poem about England and Englishness, Keith. There are many things I admire about England and, to be honest, some which I like less, such as boorish nationalism. Pleased to see that you steer clear of that here and I wonder if you are (perhaps intentionally) a little pessimistic. From where I am, many good things still remain.

Indeed, MC. I too value my life more than any Yemeni's. But that's not the equation here, is it? I don't value that Yemeni's life any less than a car crash victim or a Covid death or a Duke's. They all weigh the same for me. (And if there is a God, for him too I suspect|).

A friend of mine was a football (soccer) referee. He told me that if you refereed a match involving a police team and gave some decisons they did not like, your car was followed all the way home by officers looking for some motoring offence! They never stopped off for donuts, as far as he knew.

Sorry JC, but subjectively speaking - and in real (rather than
theological term) e.g.the bottom line is: I value m,y life more than that of a Yemeni. in Yemen or anyone anywhere else. After all,
how can I affect the actions of what others do and improve
their chances if I am dead myself? Looking after Number One
has that quality and ability of being able to look towards helping
others. And, remember, even the bible itself asks: Am I my brother's keeper?

Thankyou, Kevin and MC.
Despite its flaws I would far prefer to live in our society than most others, MC, but it doesnโt add heft to the worth of your or my life over someoneโs in, say, the Yemen.
