Not easy to read in this format but a brilliant write right from the go. Fascinating how our insecurities tarnish us for life to some degree.

Super work, well done Ralph.

When people talk of levelling up, it's as though northerners are asking for a handout.
In fact taxes raised up here are being used to fund schemes down south.

We don't need levelling up, we just need the government to stop robbing us.

It's hard to imagine living in a country where you are not allowed to have an opinion. I don't think that if I lived there I'd be brave enough to speak out in public.

“Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.” WB Yeats

Thank you very much, Greg and Keith. Yes, the pity of war and the destruction, both human and material, that it causes is something very real. We must support Ukraine but also find a way to bring this terrible war to an end.

'We are where we are' is a wonderful euphemism for ignoring all the mistakes of the past, John. Like BJ's 'move on', it seems to involve complete absolution in return for a promise to do better. I think you capture this very well in the poem.

But I shudder to think of what might take its place in the human
context of inspiration/aspiration". Did Orwell;'s "1984" have
Royalty as its villain?. There can be a tendency to confuse its
meaning to the population at large with the decisions made by
politicians about who gets what from cash taken from the tax-payers' pockets.

Thanks for the like and comment. Frederick. Agree that many teachers are rendered impotent by the system. If they chide the child/student the parents are often aggressive, verbally and sometimes even physically, without even working out why he/she was told off. Don't think though that the future citenzry will be very docile, quite the contrary!!!
