Artists, Writers & Poets speak out

Artists, Writers & Poets speak out

In the heart of Mother Russia

there beats the drum of fervent dissent

Intellectuals, artists, writers and poets

speak out against a tyrannical regime

These men and women are held in high esteem

but find themselves persecuted indeed

Free expression through the arts is aggresively supressed

because the authorities think they know best

The canvas, pen and ink

are not afraid to think and blink

Free hearts and true spirits rise up

and declare that they will not be shut up

Heroes of courage, the soul of the nation

create a reality of this appalling situation

As of old these noble men and women

will use their skills to defeat and expose this fascism

Well said Keith. It is hard to think that this still happens in a country that sees itself as so enlightened. Or perhaps not!
Thanks for posting

Thank you: Frederick, Greg, Jon, Stephen, Aisha and Holden for your likes and thank you to Kevin and Stephen for you comments. I am grateful for your encouragement and support.

Kevin I too wonder if I were in a dictatorship whether I would have the courage to voice an opinion or speak out as the consequences are not worth thinking about. I lived for sometime in Spain under the dictatorship of General Franco in the 1960's and remember well the need to tread carefully and to be very non committal. People often disappeared during the night never to be seen again.

Thank you again to all,
Keith

It's hard to imagine living in a country where you are not allowed to have an opinion. I don't think that if I lived there I'd be brave enough to speak out in public.

An important defence of free speech and the freedom to protest, Keith. Thank you for this.
