I love your poems 'Famous'. All so very true! And a tribute to a very special sounding person. Don't judge me for not knowing who Seamus was before this poem!

Also, the Worlds Cup final poem-very touching. A lot of people will resonate with that poem. I like that it reflects the hardship but also strength endured from that hardship.

Kind regards,
Rasa

I enjoyed this series very much, particularly the way Simon Armitage focused on some lesser known poems (e.g. A Bridge for the Living, Going Going). I found the input of other poets and pundits to be a bit variable but at its best (Ian McMillan, Stephen Bush) very informative.
We all know he was a far from perfect human being, but the poetry stands on its own.

Thank you to one and all for reading and commenting on this enigmatic poem. I cannot fathom out what is taking place in my psyche. I find myself drawn to music and an era of which I have never been a part of as it was before I was born. I have mental images of peoples and places which relate to that particular time but can't seem to find where I fit in. It is in Germany. Some years ago I visited Berlin after the wall came down. Everything was strangely familiar. I knew where to get off trains and which direction to walk in. But the street scenes were not current but I was in the past.
Perhaps I should take more water with it.
Thank you to all
Keith

I’m pretty sure, MC, that the sample plugs they take from your prostate don’t cause it to leak like a watering can rose. In contrast, taking a pee these days is a lively affair as my guzinta can sprinkle its wares in several directions simultaneously.
By the by, I haven’t seen you post in a while. Have your retired your quill and vellum?

"Assume the position"! I recall my own experience at St. Mary's
here in London W2 - instructive to a curious frame of mind that
is always astonished and impressed by the adaptability of the
human body. Mine was a 12-pin intrusion. And I often wonder
just what longer term effect such a medical "assault" would
have on that important internal organ! They never tell youi when
they insist on ongoing check-ups and MRI scans thereafter.
For the patient - out of sight but not quite out of mind.

Thank you Frederick Kevin Stephen John and Holden for liking this poem.

Interesting how tongue tied and nervous we get as you say Graham in the presence of recognised faces. I was lucky often to work with quite famous people on stage and it took the sting out of it. Luckily, Tony Booth was quite an extrovert, whereas a lot of actors keep to themselves.

Grateful for that observation Uilleam.

Intriguing Stephen. I assume you worked at the HQ then. Good transport connections!

Ah yes Mark. Bernard Archard was quite well known in films and TV in the 70s , aquiline nose and tall if i'm right. Never a big star of course, but as you say instantly recognizable. Funny when you quoted your question to him it almost reminded me of the apprehension of Christie - " you're Christie...."

Thanks for your thoughts, MC and John.
I’m rather proud to say that I shared a similar experience with Edward II. When I had a prostate biopsy a couple of years ago, the doctor explained to me that he was “introducing a sleeve up my anus” so that he could insert the needle which would take plug samples from the prostate. From my foetus position I told him about Edward II. “I should have a picture of him on my office wall” he said. “Another satisfied customer!”
And thanks for the Likes, Holden and Frederick.

As GS pbserves - a great currency for experience put in words.
I recall walking homewards along Gloucester Place W1 after an early tour of duty (6am-2pm) and spotting actor Bernard
Archard ahead of me. I had seen him in various roles on TV & film and couldn't resist the chance to speak; "You're Bernard
Archard, aren;t you?" He was politeness personnified and we
chatted for some minutes before parting company. I've since
located a copy of his excellent autobiography (recommended).
He was one of that breed of actor who graced many quality
productions, instantly recognisable but whose name may not
have been so readily brought to mind.

These lines remind me of some narrative dreams i experience - often returning to the same familiar (yet not quite) scenes from
my own past that are intermingled with people not known to me
but yet somehow not strange either. Are our brains pre-programmed via genetics with previous existence that is linked
with our latest incarnation on this p;lanet? Is this a sign of some
great continuum of life?

- read to such good effect to close a fine old BBC documentary (those were the days!) called "The Queen's Realm" featuring an aerial view of the country through the seasons, embellished
with some well chosen music...

Ooeer!! But the consistency is how the "tools" for the job appear.
Henry had his suggestible knights to dispose of Becket; Roger
and his scheming paramour found the knaves to vist Berkeley
Castle on the Severn to stick it up poor Edward. Boris has now
suffered a metaphorical demise at the hands of Sunak & Javid
who stuck it up him in their own opportunistic way. Ouch!!
Back to Edward and Berkeley Castle, the home of the boss of
the Tower of London..It must have been a god-forsaken place
back then, towering over a few hovels and the damp reaches
of the River Severn. And still noted for its dreadful couplet;
The shrieks through Berkeley's rafters ring
The screams of an agonising king.
