For me, the key reference is the word 'friend'. Psychiatrists are successful because they are are a surrogate friend, sincere, non-judgemental and discreet. If we had such friends we wouldn't need psychiatrists.

This a thoughtful piece CBT. I have to say I have enjoyed this recent productive period of yours.
On the matter of counselling/reassurance, I think one of the problems these days is few of us have really good friends who will "say it as it is" and not just passively reassure, brow mopping etc.
We all need a strong support structure but it needs to be two sided not just tea and sympathy!
Good piece Cynthia (I hope the productivity continues too).

This is likely the last of my 'strange journey of words', this particular March of 2018. But it has certainly been interesting.

no audio Ray? Did you not fancy impersonating the Hawk? Too soon perhaps? I'm sure you could have done a decent Doddy though. There's been a lot of internet imaginings of the Prof's hereafter - walking away from his wheelchair towards the stars for example. I think that one annoyed some disability campaigners. He was an atheist and Doddy was a Christian. All good crazy mixed up fun! You capture it well. See you on the other side one day....well maybe.

Lovely Ray,
Funnily enough Ken Dodd had a mad scientist vibe about him. Kindred spirits?

I think this is fine stuff Ian; it has a "do and die" quality with a sort of gritty ethereal undertone. It'll do for me - I think it has a bravery in it which I admire. Well constructed like a folk song format. I won't try too much to analyse it. I don't think it needs too much probing.

A salutary tale Cynthia, hard on the back of The Dive - they do as you say show a good flow - this was obviously hard earned, and great to read!

You can almost feel the weight of activity and slog in this poem David; it takes us back to cobbled backyards and rudimentary needs, with no refinements. Wives treated as horses. I love the idea of the mangle's tight - lipped throat, and the whole sag and soak of it.
Great writing. Ray

This is an amazing piece of work.
The soldiers so optimistic in the beginning, so willing.
Not aware of the deception, the pain and tragedy that awaits.
Powerful.

Most of America will always be blind to the plight that infects our nation. It doesn't matter how many well-reasoned arguments we have, I say this place was fucked from the get-go. Best not get me started on a rant about all the things that could have been avoided or changed in the past. From the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment to Operation Wetback, all the way down to the current Flint water crisis and multiple occasions of political corruption seeping through from the core. I'd never defend living in America over another country, so fuck what people think. Nevertheless, as an outsider to your perspective and country I found it interesting/refreshing to read your point of view. Very intriguing, and very passionate poem by the way.

Fulsome praise indeed Col. Bruce was an all rounder and a crowd pleaser with a flare for the obvious - a gentle jibe here and a tickling of the ivories there. Bernard on the other hand .....he made a warts and all doc when he knew he had little time left, and it was quite moving - self deprecating, which seemed to give the lie to his perceived persona.
Thanks . Ray

Re Graham's comment - the whole point of counselling is that you get to pour everything out to a person who is not in any way emotionally connected to you. In that way, there is no 'burden', no judgement, no change of behaviour in order to appease, or subdue anything at all.
Anyway, interesting piece Cynth, and I realise via Graham's comment that your initials are the same as the acronym for cognitive behavioural therapy. How neat is that? I'm sure you have already thought of that though, it being you.
