Oh, I enjoyed this and had a good laugh as I’ve just written a poem about a lover sending a love song. We certainly do get wrapped up in love songs as they build up the emotions, and warrant us to escape from reality. In fact it becomes a delusional reality, so do we blame the love songs or the harsh reality of life?

Never lost for words. Forgive my own wry smile on that subject..

A saying from many years ago (like certain other truths they do last) is that it isn't possible to reason with a person who lacks
reason. The subversive tone of this symphony also lasts and
gives hope when reason fails. (But I'll stick with his 5th - thanks.)

Ah! very clever. I saw what you did there. Come to think of it, many of His Bob's work would fit in the current climate. 'Masters of War' comes to mind.
Nature knows no boundaries, a great line! And very true to boot. I planted a new asparagus bed this morning and felt good that it won't be ready for 4/5 years yet. I hope to enjoy at least one mouthful.

Fascinating. I love the description of the music and the haunting link to current events. Have we really moved very far forward? Fine poem Stephen.
I used to ask classes 'Who wrote Beethoven' s Last Symphony'?
The answer was never Beethoven! 😂

A really enjoyable poem, John, and it makes many excellent points! 😎 Indeed, the "morality of love songs" probably ought to be questioned! 😄

You're right, Julie, heartwarming and more heartbreak in equal measure. But love and good luck to this lovely family. Remembering the husband's hunger strike. We really needed this news.

Sorry I haven't got round to commenting on this poem before now, Tom. Wonderful settings and details - "I’ve got a skull full of sea /
and the sting of that thing, it lingers / squid ink ..." - Thinking about the end of the world, near the top of the world.

Thanks very much for your comments, John. For those who read this interview yesterday, just to say that we've now added a sound file of Antony's lyrical and very moving recent poem 'If the end comes ...'. You can find it below the interview.

Great questions and answers. Poetry or discourse won't change a thing of course but dialogue matters, anyway.

Thanks for the observation Mark. I would agree that the burgeoning of the motorway network was a commercially inspired decision with the colossal run down of the railway system. With the benefit of hindsight..... !
That's interesting Stephen, I had no idea. Sounds rather different from the German autobahn case.

Some years ago, my adopted home of Belgium was well known for building roads which finished abruptly in the middle of nowhere, when the budget ran out or the road crossed into another region which was not willing to pay for it. Literally, roads to nowhere.

Thanks SG. I tend to agree with you. The job is hardly geared
to making decisions that are rigid and consistent across the board. Indeed, the words "yes" and "no" are fraught with risk
when uttered by those in positions of influence in that line of work,. And it's a necessity to know the dissembling and deceit
that exists in life. not least when ambition and power exist in
all their unappealing varieties. Harking back to my own old line
of work, it helps to think like a crook when dealing with a crook!! 😌

Don't we know it Ray!
These last couple of days have been nice and warm here and we have made a good start tidying and waking the soil up. The garden beasts haven't properly woken up yet it seems.
No matter what tribulations the garden brings there is always that time in the evening when a glass of wine in hand one can survey one's little plot of the earth and say 'I did that'.
snails and slugs await in the trugs........priceless!

Thanks Greg much appreciated. Bonkers of course but my speciality to chime with much of the world we live in. I read today that some years back there was a proposed route to be known as the M31 which was partially built as the A329M to link the M3 and M4 as that does now, Where will it all end?
Stephen, I remember that spur. That reminds me of a toll road from the M6 to avoid a long detour near the M42. I'm utterly confused now.

I suppose we must be willing victims, where the song says something specificclly to us and we connect it our own reality. Delusional, then! 😂
