Soppy Love Songs

We hang upon the melody for its gentle fall and rise,

So, the entry of the violins should come as no surprise.

The affirmations of undying love, run rife,

Life without you, darling, would be such a chore!

But I am questioning the morality of love songs.

I’m, frankly, dubious about their integrity

I’ve been duped by their delusional qualities

Oh, so many times before

And I don’t need soppy love songs anymore!

Help me, Rhonda, help me, help me,

Help me rid those love songs from my mind!

It’s all ‘head in the clouds’ and optimistic!

I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky!

I should be more realistic!

Real life, real people, real problems,

Don’t feature in the lexicography.

In lyrics banal, inane, and poor,

A con trick played on susceptible minds!

Don’t play me soppy love songs anymore!

Songs sweep you up in a tide of emotion,

They attempt to befuddle your brain,

With a sweet and sticky loving potion,

But what is it that you actually feel?

Is it just rhetoric or something more real?

Wouldn’t it be nice to say goodnight

And stay together?

Well, as it turned out, in hindsight,

Indubitably, no, it wasn’t, it wasn't nice at all!

So, don’t build me up buttercup,

Don’t play me soppy love songs anymore!

The use of jingles in advertising certainly proves your point about
how music can influence our conscious minds. And, never fear,
I did enjoy your basic humorous point about the effect of "lurve" songs on our sensibilities. I even recall a well known operatic
tenor saying a favourite song was "Some Enchanted Evening"!

Thanks, Stephen. I really appreciate your comments, as ever. Where does love meet lust, I wonder? Could be another poem 😂

Another fine poem, John. Beautiful love songs really do have a beguiling quality, which makes them difficult to resist. Mozart's Don Giovanni, for instance, although his are really lust songs!

MC. A really fascinating commentary which is clearly true. Thank you! What I intended was a wry, tongue in cheek look at the genre.
Like advertising, songs can influence how we think and behave. 😊

Interesting topic. I have written a few myself and had them
recorded for (primarily) my own pleasure. The best come
from years ago and remain as relevant now as they ever were
because they were written by those with talent for the genre
plus that essential life experience that makes any such song
worth attention. Some of the titles alone are worth our time:
"The Night We Called It A Day""/ "Bewitched, Bothered and
Bewildered"/ "I've Got You Under My Skin"/"Stardust" - and so many more gems of popular music that never lose their lustre.
Sinatra remains, for me, their matchless interpreter with
his unique vocal tone - honey with that dash of sourmash to
remind us that all is not "hearts and flowers" in this life. His
album "In The Wee Small Hours" is as good an example of
popular music at its very best as can be found anywhere and
shows us that "pop" doesn't have to mean "slop"!

Thanks Pamela. You're quite right. The songs differ according to the age of the writer and the listener. 😀 Glad that I made you think, though! 😂

Yes love songs are often written by young people but wiser heads are sometimes more sceptical and hard nosed through bad experiences. Does the writer simply want light airy fun words to fit a happy tune or a more thoughtful reflective piece? 😂
Great poem John. Still making us think!! 🥰🥰

Thanks, Kimberley, so much for the way you've engaged with my poem!
I suppose we must be willing victims, where the song says something specificclly to us and we connect it our own reality. Delusional, then! 😂

Oh, I enjoyed this and had a good laugh as I’ve just written a poem about a lover sending a love song. We certainly do get wrapped up in love songs as they build up the emotions, and warrant us to escape from reality. In fact it becomes a delusional reality, so do we blame the love songs or the harsh reality of life?

Thanks Holden for your really supportive comments! 😎 I suspect they are motivated by money rather than ethical considerations!!!!

A really enjoyable poem, John, and it makes many excellent points! 😎 Indeed, the "morality of love songs" probably ought to be questioned! 😄
