It's a double edged sword isn't it. On one hand you're thinking why show that? On the other, there's still people who need to actually see it to believe, or care.
Great piece, as usual, Stephen

The sort of thing I'd expect from John Coopey - and that's
intended as a compliment, in case you're wondering!

Dreams are strange "visitors". My own sleep pattern tends to be interrupted and can result in two distinct portions, the second
of which can contain what I consider to be "narrative" dreams,
often with the same theme and setting, but not always the same characters. Sometimes they are so vivid as to remain with me
for a while after rising while I try to make out their connection to
anything in my life. Then there are the wonderful "flying over beautiful countryside" dreams. Those I DO enjoy, without feeling any need to question their origins!!

I share your misgivings about this public intrusion into essentially
private grief. We know what war does to people's lives and the
media should be able to learn from the work of the reporters of
the past and let the images speak for themselves without the
"in your face" invasion of the personal space of the emotionally
distraught at the time of their greatest vulnerability.

It's 33 years today since the Hillsborough disaster. I remember sitting down in front of the TV expecting to watch a football match, and seeing something else entirely. This is my poem 'Results', from my book 'The Taking Part'.

I wrote this after seeing a 'Grieving Ukrainian Monther' featured on CNN (and captioned as such), just after discovering her son's body in Bucha. I wondered whether it was appropriate to intrude on someone's grief in this way. In the end, I can see some reasons why it was.

Love it Ray. I have often assumed different personalities in my head throughout the years. But in a sense isn't that a part of what makes us writers and poets.
By the way I love that last line

nice one

Fair point, John, though it's quite easy to have a 'good war' when your not the one being invaded. It's given him a bounce but he'll come down one day (perhaps quite soon).

Strange thing about war. It has always been a feature of human existence: awful in its short-term cost, yet somehow perversely
beneficial in the longer term - like a sort of demented cleansing
process. that can even "jump start" progress across a wide
spectrum that contrasts with the stagnation and rise of dissent
and dissatisfaction that prolonged peace can bring. Some politicians take advantage of what it offers, that's for sure.

The works of Stevie Smith are possibly my greatest influence to write, her poetry always appears easy, and reading her life story helps with some of her inspirations, I'm glad her works came into my life so long ago.
I do try when possible to imitate her style because I admire it so much
