Monumental Disgrace

The harrowing news continues
to shock, disgust and terrify
Tales of the most evil war crimes
appall, anger and horrify

Russia proclaims that it’s all lies
and I think I would say the same
If my army’s reputation
was now one of ultimate shame

A soldier has a job to do
and that is to serve and protect
Their brave and loyal duty
carried out with honor and respect

It would seem that Russia’s soldiers
do not hold these qualities
What kind of human being
is capable of such atrocities

I wonder how they recruit them
these sad excuses of mankind
Who signed up to serve their country
and left their consciences behind

We all knew that this war would bring
death, bloodshed and desperation
But no one could have imagined
the extent of mass devastation

The news never fails to shock
such evil acts taking place
The fact that this is our word today
is truly a monumental disgrace

A fine poem, Julie, saying things which have to be said. I feel sorry for the young conscripts but what is happening is truly inexcusable.
