Funny I was thinking the same thing myself only yesterday. What if it were all just 'beautiful crap' as Larkin termed it (referring to something of his own btw.). It seems blasphemous to have such thoughts.

Hi Greg
I generally agree. Someone as dangerous as Putin should have been handled with kid gloves however, the situation has been made worse by American foreign policy. Refusing his application to join NATO all those years ago was probably not a good move for a start.

For a number of years we lived on a smallholding and ate our own produce - including meat, milk, eggs and veg. very hard work but we impacted no-one. We are now no longer able to live that life although, in part, we continue with some aspects of it.
My thanks to Frederick, John, Holden, K.Lynne and to purplemoon for your very encouraging likes .

Thank you so much for your comments.
I was influenced by reading somewhere once that Margaret was King George's joy, whilst Elizabeth was his pride.
I was chatting about Simon Armitage's poem to my daughter when she challenged me to write one last night. It takes a lot to get the cogs whirring nowadays but I think reading other people's poems on the subject has helped. Didn't manage to get any lilies in there though!
Would I have wanted the Queen's life, with all her money and privilege? Not on your Nelly.

First of all it's brilliant to see you posting again Izzy!
These lines could have stood on their own they are so good!

the thread of all you did and were
is now complete

The abiding problem is that it is often impossible to disentangle anti-Israel rhetoric from anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism.

I don't always agree with everything Sangita says, but she and Marcus Rashford (who campaigns against homelesness and child hunger) were singled out on air by a woman caller, on the grounds of their percieved race / origins / colour.

Dia duit, John.
The Irish title of your poem caught my eye, just as I was busy preparing for our holiday, so I left commenting until now.
I love the imagery you use in the English version, but I can't comment on the Irish version as I'm teaching myself only basic Irish.
What language was the original in?

I find this quite magical, Isobel. The idea of duty as self-denial, of missing out on things, with death a kind of relief, the casting off of a burden. A great piece.

Yes - some nice lines in there but I'm not really a fan of acrostic poetry either. I sympathise with him though, having to knock something up when he might not be feeling it - I find it really hard to write poetry on demand and I guess he's drawn the short straw of the century having to write a poem for the death of a monarch.
He was great at my daughter's graduation ceremony in Leeds - such a pleasure to listen to.
Alas he can't make it to our Marsden poetry jam, Julian. I did invite him - which felt a bit like inviting the queen to my garden party at the time 🤣
It's a great pity, as he'll miss the Andrews Sister number that we are dedicating to him. 'You have to be in Marsden to get in the mood...'
I hope lots of other wonderful poets from this site might turn up though!
Let's keep banging the drum 😃

I agree with all that Graham says. Very good, given the context, but an acrostic? Really?
I suppose it is more or less the last resort of a scoundrel poet, which he is if, as seems possible, Stephen (A), he nicked your theme. Which would be good if it suggests he nicked it from our website. In which case, Hi Simon, get yourself to the Marsden Jazz Festival poetry jam that is, this year, being run by Isobel, at what you told our news editor, Greg, was once your local, the Railway.

Yes, an almost impossible task to create something the people can relate too & also be a respectful tribute to our Queen. A decent job done in such a delicate situation

I would like to thank John B, John C and John S, as well as Holden, for their comments.
It's true that this is a rather gloomy piece, but I am fascinated by the passage of time and the inevitability of change. I often heard it said at work that no one is indispensable, and in the end time will dispense with everyone. Which is not to say that we can't enjoy ourselves until it happens!
